Can you pick your duty weapon?

Once someone becomes a LEO, are they allowed to chose their personal preferrenced duty weapon or must they use what the dept. issues? Just one of those curiosity questions, I know most depts are going with glock these days and not a bad choice either.

from what i've been told about my area, mainly full time officers are issued weapons. All others must be approved before use, mainly in caliber, safety issues, those sort of things.

It all depends on the departments policy. All departments are different.

Each department has different rules and regulations when it comes to duty weapons.

Some departments only allow an officer to carry what is issued to them, while other PDs allow their officers to choose based on personal preference.

There is no standard, it varies from place to place.

Our department issues if you choose or you can buy your own. I bought my own.

NYPD you have a choice of 3 that are issued. All have the same caliber/capacity. Choices between a Sig, Smith, or Glock.

The US Marshal Service allows you to carry the Glock 22 (full-size .40), the Glock 23 (mid-size .40), or the Glock 27 (compact .40) as a primary duty weapon.

You can carry one or two backup guns, which must be at least .380 and hold at least five rounds.

Same for USFWS. The Glock 27 can be carried as a BUG or as a "primary alternate".

We can only carry issued weapons ( Glock .40) and issued ammo. That way my mag will fit in another officer's weapon etc.

My agency issues either the Sig or a Glock in 9mm, but if you choose you can carry a sidearm that you own as long as it is inspected and approved by the department's firearms instructor... and you have to qualify on it obviously.

My agency issues a Sig in 9mm, but once you get through the Academy you can purchase your own weapon if you choose. The weapon has to be approved by the dept. armorer and you have to qualify with it, but beyond that you're free to choose what you'd like. I've seen everything from a Glock, to a Kimber, to a HK USP.

At least with my PD, if I NEED a mag from another officer , I KNOW it will fit my gun. I LIKE that feeling. No having to strip ammo from a mag while under fire !!!

I understand the logic mscap, but I also see the benefits of allowing officers to select and use a weapon they are more comfortable with. For my part, Sigs just don't feel right in my hand.

Besides, we've got AR-15's and shotguns for when it's time to really play.

The agency I'm going to (Carroll Count Sheriff's Dept, MD) issues you a Glock 19. You don't get a choice.

    Actual conversation with suspect
Suspect: Why am I under arrest?
    Me: For posession of CDS.
Suspect: Man, it wasn't CDS! It was E pills!
