At my high school, they have a small dome camera about every 5 feet, and sometimes ten feet. They could be doing anything, as we have a school district police department who seem to not be doing much.

Our local PD has them, inside the lobby and upstairs to the detective offices.

I would think it would only be illegal if there was some state law saying it is. Ideally (well to me anyway :P) a private company could video tape and record anything they wanted to on their own property. It's a condition of an employment, and while it might suck, you either deal with it or go someplace else. As far as I am aware, you don't have an expectation to privacy on someone elses property. Maybe there are some court cases that say otherwise in limited circumstances, anybody know of any?

We have cameras all over the place where I work, inside and out. They told us that cameras were legal as long as there was no sound. In other words, they can watch but they can't listen. They are not allowed in the restrooms. They only bother you for a little while, kind of like having someone look over your shoulder. You get used to them. :D

Honest people don't need to worry. We did have one man quit over them though. I guess he wasn't one of the honest ones. :D Nobody sits in a little room and watches us. The video runs to a VCR type thing and each days worth of video is only kept for a short length of time. They only time they look at the in-plant video is if they have an "incident". The only monitored video we have is in the guard shack. The guards watch all the gates in and out of the plant. I think this is the way most surveillance systems work in the work place except for department stores, etc. Those are monitored full time.
