7-year-old boy dies after falling from dad's SUV

LONG BEACH — An unrestrained 7-year-old Long Beach boy was crushed to death in the Traffic Circle area after he opened a door and fell out of his father's Chevrolet Suburban, a police officer said Sunday.
Kamau Saafir was pronounced dead at the scene at about 7:50 p.m. Saturday in the 1700 block of Obispo Avenue, said Long Beach police Officer Israel Ramirez.

The boy's 35-year-old father, Kwame Saafir of Long Beach, had just dropped off a passenger and was pulling away to continue south on Obispo, but Kamau Saafir opened the door and fell out of the front passenger seat before he was crushed by a rear tire, Ramirez said.

There were no seat belts in the front of the 1981 Suburban, and there were no usable seat belts in the rest of the vehicle, Ramirez said. The seat belts and the back had been torn out of the front seat bench, which Ramirez called an illegal modification.

There were 11 people inside the SUV, including nine more children, but Ramirez said that the vehicle was only designed to carry nine passengers. He said he didn't know if the rest of the children were related to each other.

I am the mother of that little boy. His father and I were separated for 4 years before the accident. He would keep the children for the weekend. This particular weekend, my son had a flu and I had to work. I asked him various times to allow him to rest in bed because he was sick. His dad did not heed to my request and took him on an outing with the boyscouts. It was 3 days before he was to turn 8 years old. His dad had recieved several tickets from LBPD in the past for the same reasons in the past. He was told not to drive the vehicle due to the illegal modifications. As a matter of fact, the day my son died, He was stopped by an officer and told to park the vehicle. He had all 11 kids in the truck. He took the kids on a bus to their destination, then later got back in the truck and that is when the accident happened. Some of the events that took place seem criminal but no one can do anything about it except God. The father only got 3 months in jail for manslaughter. I am so hurt and I will never be the same person again. I don't know what to do about this except cry. Thank you for listening.

As I told DC, I thought he was rude to you when he closed the other thread about this... I feel for you and wish I could say something that would help, but I can't. :(

Have you investigated suing this a-hole for wrongful death? Should be a cinch to prove, since the standards for a manslaughter conviction are much higher

I extend nothing but compassion and prayers to you on your loss.

When you stated above that all you do is cry, that's ok.
Crying, will lead you to answers that only God can give you in time of mourning,
and from there........take you on the path to healing.

It is with utterly love and sympathy that I say unto you,
may the tears of your yesterday, be the joy of your tomorrow!

I believe those whom have passed are always near......God bless, angel!
