Why not? It'd be nice to see my local police department run their bike patrol all year round. With the right equipment it's not near as difficult or unsafe as people think it is. I've done my fair share of winter riding and it can at times be more enjoyable than summer riding.
There are many dangers riding a bike in the cold elements. Miss a good patch of ice and you could be off on leave for an entire winter because of a shoulder or head injury. Bicycle tires are very easy and fast to slide on ice. Not to mention braking would be a nightmare.
Generally speaking most departments pull their bikes off the road after the first snow or freeze here in MI. There are a few that I know of that DO allow officers to ride on good days at their discretion.

We don't ride in cold weather either (although we have enough gear to do so).
I prefer the warm environment of my patrol vehicle...:D

One can only be so Open Minded before all that mind **** spills out, stains and ruins everything.
Doesn't seem to be a problem here this year... I don't think we are going to have any snow... And Bush says Global Warming doesn't exist... WHAT A MORON!!

Hey easy big fella, that's YOUR boss!:p

Moon Pies and RC Cola make me happy
Hey Chewy, you can have some of the snow we're having here. We're having the second blizzard in a week right now. Last week we got three feet and tonight we are getting at least another foot. I'm kinda tired of snow right now.....![]()
Ummm Oh, CRAP... your right!
Oh well, as Rumsfeld said "you go to war with the Army you have. They're not the Army you might want or wish to have at a later time" ... That's my outlook. I might like to have a government that is FOR the people, NOT for themselves and big corporations or maybe a government that isn't so friggin far left or right but more rational and centralized, or a government that gives a ****e about the country and it's people not about pizzing on everyone in order to get what their company supporters want.... But the fact is we have what we have and I just step in line as long as they leave me alone.![]()

I used to love having snow in the winter... one of the main reasons I moved back here from Texas... I don't like not having any on Christmas, it's just not right!
We had one flurry this year so far but nothing that stayed. I remember growing up and getting several feet and having temps below zero on a semi regular basis and now were not seeing anything like that, not for several years now.

Astronomical avatar of the week: The Hourglass Nebula: This formation of gasses was created when a dying star gently ejected its outer layers forming a glowing region of ionized gas as seen in the photo. The remaining core is known as a white dwarf, seen in the center. Our sun will leave a similar corpse behind after expending its nuclear fuel. This nebula is located in the constellation Musca, the fly, visible only in the southern hemisphere.
