court time

I was given the best Christmas present this morning. I checked my work email and have 6 subpoenas. This will equal about $500 in my paycheck. I was talking to my dad (retired officer) and he said I was lucky to get paid for court. We have a pretty extensive break down of how you're paid for court and it turns out these give me the most money. (Pays for Christmas) Does everyone else get paid for their court time? How does it break down for you? Just curious. Thanks

If I have court at a time not part of my regular working hours, it's OT. The one exception is Juvenile traffic court. Since I am always scheduled at 1400 for Juv court, and my shift starts at 1500, I am given the option of the one hour OT or going home an hour early that night.

If court falls during your regular shift, it's not OT. The daywork guys get screwed the most with this because court is always during their working hours so unless it's on a day off, they don't get OT pay for it.

As ChesCopPodz said, we get OT if court falls on a day off or during hours we are not working. But, the best part is we also get on-call subpeonas (not always, though). So, we can make 2.5 hrs OT for sitting at home and watching TV. :cool:

If you have a "be-there" subpeona, and an "on-call" subpeona for the same day, you can get OT for both. For example, if you are in court from 0900 to 1400 hrs then go home, you get the 5 hours for being in court, and an additional 2.5 hours for being on call after that. :D

Yeah, I don't know if our clerk is evil or what. We have a form we are supposed to fill out when we are going on vacation with those dates so the clerk doesn't set any cases on them. Almost 100% of the time, when someone fills out the void date form, they get at least one case set during that time. After battling to get days rescheduled twice after filling out the form, I stopped filling out the form.

Result?

Haven't had a court date while on vacation since.

I get a minimum of 2 hours of call in time for any off duty court appearance. If I show up and the def. pleads immediately , I get my 2 hrs and go home. If the trial lasts 30 min , I still get my 2 hours. If the trial lasts all day , I get however many hours I spent there as OT.

I can also take comp time in lieu of the money.

I don't know what I did to piss off the court clerk, but I only get called to court ON MY DAYS OFF.

My days off are Tues & Weds. So, on the 9th, I have 3 subpoenas on 1 day. I have a 9 am show up, 11:30 call in (not going to be needed) and a 1:30 show up. This will give me 18 hours of ot before I go to work for the week. I'm just happy about it. My wife can't work because of our children's medical condition. It makes me happy that I can provide for our family. Not to mention these 3 cases should be glad they were DI'd instead of being slated (except the first one- it's traffic)
If we get a subpoena while we have scheduled annual or if it is our day off and we can't make it due to plans, we just turn it back in and aren't obligated to go.
I already have so many in my subpoena folder here at home it's crazy! My assignment gives us alot of court time. (Nice for my partner too- his wife just had a baby)

We always schedule court on our dayshift days that we are working. If its jury trials or circuit court we just swap the day we go as a work day and get our regular work day off.

I work steady midnights. Traffic court = 1h40m extended tour OT allowed to be taken in cash. Late notification for regular court (ie notified on monday night at the midnight for tuesday morning) = extended tour cash OT. Court notification for day off = full tour of cash OT (if you want to hang around that long). Long notification for regular court (at least 24 hours in advance) = extended tour TIME OT OR you can do a tour change, and do a regular day tour.

NO, but if you test and get hired and , successfully take and pass the challenge test for our state certification ... you can skip the 5 month academy and go straight to FTO.
