Shedding pounds, man gains badge, wife

WHEELING, West Virginia (AP) -- Michael Warren had a lot to lose when he decided to become a lawman.

The 20-year-old once tipped the scales at more than 300 pounds. But he lost 125 pounds in 18 months to pursue a career in law enforcement.

Warren was sworn in as a deputy sheriff in Ohio County on Monday, two days after he married his high-school sweetheart.

"I got a wedding ring and a badge, and I closed on a house in one weekend," he said.

Before embarking on his journey to better fitness, Warren said he couldn't do even one push-up and didn't have the endurance to run very far. Now he can do 30 push-ups, and he runs nearly every day.

Warren said his wife, Theresa, was the "angel on my shoulder" who helped him curb his appetite. "She whacked my hands a few times," he said.

He said he limited his daily intake to no more than 30 grams of fat a day, lifted weights and worked up to running a mile or two every day.

Warren said he doesn't expect to gain the weight back because he is in a job surrounded by people who are committed to fitness.

"I'm happy to be where I am now," he said.

"I personally believe that U.S. Americans are unable to do so because some people out there in our nation don't have maps and I believe that our education like such as in South Africa and the Iraq and everywhere like such as and I believe that they should our education over here in the U.S. should help the U.S. or should help South Africa and should help the Iraq and the Asian countries so we will be able to build up our future for us."
