Indiana Law Enforcement Merge?

Okay, so I have a friend (actually, an RP user) who has been telling me something about some bill in Indiana that intends to merge LE agencies into one department. Something along the lines of merging all the Police and Sheriff's Departments into one agency or only having one agency per county or something of that nature. A family member of his is a Reserve Deputy in the state, so I give him some credit to his story, but I just could not imagine an administrative nightmare like that.

I figured I would have seen something on here about it, but I havent so I searched all the way back to July (when he first told me) and still no luck.

Has anyone heard anything about this? :confused:

Also... NEVER would the Sheriffs give up what they have. Hell, the cities wouldn't either, for that matter.

Indianapolis is going through a merger right now, perhaps that was what he/she was referring to?

That wouldn't happen here. It'd be one big p!ss!ng match. Kinda like what Ft. Wayne/Allen Co. has seen trying to merge their dispatch centers.

After some further research, this may be what he was referring to. He did say, "All of Indiana is going to be on big department" but I just cannot see something like that EVER happening.

The IPD / MCSD merge has been a big thing in Indy for the last year or two. It's going into effect in 2007. Here's the link to the consolidation.

I live just north of Indianapolis, and what your friend said is incorrect. The IPD and Marion County SD are merging into the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department. Sheriff Frank Anderson will lead the department.

My city is policed by a police department and a different county sheriff's department. They won't merge, but the IMPD will exist on Jan. 1st.

I read about the Indianapolis/Marion County merger elsewhere (mailing list). The poster wasn't too impressed but there are always going to be teething problems when something like that happens.

One of our Chaplains (sadly now deceased) used to be a Reserve Deputy with Marion County some thirty-something years ago when he was studying there.

Never heard of that, I do however know there are several agencies in New Jersey along the shore line that are discussing the possibility of merging into one agency. Not a big fan of the concept.
