I've just seen "The Departed", I thought that the troopers didn't take care of criminal investigations, so I visited Mass State Police and NYSP official website and they each have a crime investigation unit, can you explain me more about that, I'm a bit lost.

NYSP not only has a group of detectives that investigate crime, they also have a major cases squad for the really big stuff that goes on. Not to mention they run a very top notch crime scene and crime lab program. I had the pleasure of working with some of their forensic guys about a year back. Really top notch.

thank you, but what you mean by "top notch", I don't understand everything YET but I'll learn very fast.

I went to College right next to their academy and forensic center. It is a huge place and they have tons of differant goodies to work with in there. :D

Top Notch is slang for elite.

While state police are known for just doing traffic enforcement and working accidents in heavily populated areas, they have more responsibility in more rural areas.

Heavily populated areas have lots of local law enforcement that can handle general LE duties. In more rural areas you'll find much less local law enforcement so the state police will handle calls for service as well as other investigations.

Thanks again, one more question, there is a Troop office in NYCity, Is there a Criminal Investigation Bureau there ?, how cases are alloted between State and locals ?

The case load depends on how much responsiblity is taken on by the local cops. Where I life the State Police DO NOT answer calls for service but in the next Town over they are primary backup for that agency since they have little amount of resources. I worked 45 minutes away where there was both a local and state police presence, the state police handled most calls for service there.

State police have offices all over NY including NYC as well as Long Island. They are everywhere though I imagine they dont do much work in the NYC area besides supplement NYPD.
