Coast Guard Officials Seize Catch
U.S. Coast Guard | November 22, 2006
New York - Officials seized the catch of a fishing vessel south of Shinnecock, N.Y., Tuesday night for an illegal hidden compartment and illegally harvesting flounder in New York state waters off-season.
The 74-foot fishing vessel Cindisea was about nine miles south of Shinnecock Inlet when a crew from the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Sailfish boarded the vessel at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday. The boarding team located a hidden four-foot by four-foot hole in the bulkhead of the fish hold. An inspection of the compartment revealed a void leading to two hidden compartments containing 15 boxes of illegal flounder weighing approximately 70 pounds each. The boarding team stopped the vessel two miles south of Shinnecock after discovering the hidden compartments.
The cutter Sailfish crew and a small boat crew from Coast Guard Station Shinnecock escorted the Cindisea into Shinnecock Harbor after National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration Fisheries Enforcement directed the vessel back to port about 9 p.m. Tuesday. Once in port, government agents seized the illegal catch and seized the vessel's logs and records.
None of the vessel's crew were arrested. The incident is under investigation.
The 82-foot cutter based in Sandy Hook, N.J. was conducting offshore search and rescue, homeland security and maritime law enforcement operations off Long Island when the crew spotted the Cindisea.
