    For our Canadian members.

While at work last night I saw on the news that Quebec is trying to become its own country away from Canada and that the Canadian governement was leaning toward granting the request saying they would approve it but it wouldnt change how things operated much. What do you guys think of that just curious.

    Not a Canadian.

    Personally I think it's a terrible idea.

With that said, I happen to love visiting Quebec City. If you have never been, you really should go.

    Edited to add link.

    Visit Quebec today.

There are other people that know a lot more about this than I do, but they have been trying to become their own country for a very long time, this is nothing new. But our Prime Minister has said that Quebec will become it's own nation, within a unified Canada. They aren't separating, and are still going to be a part of Canada.

Quebec is a major reason why Stephen Harper was able to win the election, as he gained many seats in that province that they weren't expected to win.

+1 to the above post, Quebec has been at this for a very long time. IMO it's a horrible idea.

They'll still be using Canadian currency, correct? If so, they want to be independent but still depend on Canada at the same time.

I haven't done much research on this topic though, so I don't really know how the debate is going. As a result, I'm probably talking about something that they were debating a few years ago

So basically its like telling a kid your going to letting them do something but actually tricking them lol. I dont understand the whole "own county" but still a unified Canada thing.

This whole debate is about semantic... and semantic only....

    The word use????

    "NATION"

Here how it goes.... Canadian Governement lead by Stephen Harper introduced the following motion

"Quebec is a Nation within a unified Canada"

Honnestly .... WTF does that mean...

Nothing.... Personnaly I can only think that it means that we are different in our origin.

Funny to see the reporters going all over Montreal streets today asking citizens what a NATION was for them!

Nobody could answer... The dictionnary even gives 5 definitions for it!

We call Natives "First Nations".... We have United Nations... as of now Quebec is considered a Nation within Canada.... Well before we were considered as a DISTINCT SOCIETY. Do you guys know the difference between a Distinct society and a Nation:confused:

Soon Japanese descendant living in Canada will also very well be consider a Nation!!!! Really it does'nt mean much...

Harper made a fast move out of it because he knew that somebody would introduce their own motion soon and he would end up voting against it putting all Quebec citizens pissed off over some semantic debate.... Instead he moved fast and proposed his own motion while including that the NATION would have to be part of a United Canada....

    That's cool!

To me that politician debate means absolutely nothing. Seems like Nation means more of a "country" for anglophones and more of "people from the same origin" for Francophones in Canada...

That is all we need to fight for another 20 years.

Recognizing Quebeckers as a nation, even inside a united Canada, implies the recognition of ethnicity; there should be civic nationalism, not ethnic nationalism.

The nation of Canada is all about treating everyone as equal under the law. All immigrants will tell you that they do not want to be treated differently or identified as being different... this is the idea we need to be pushing. Let's move forward, not backwards into the past.

The Fathers of Confederation, both French and English, spoke eloquently of creating something greater than the simple sum of the parts. Indeed, French-Canadians at one time looked beyond the borders of Quebec in articulating their national identity. For instance, the esteemed French-Canadian nationalist Henri Bourassa argued forcefully that the ethnic French-Canadian nation could take pride in forming a part of a broader civic Canadian national identity. It is only recently that Quebecois nationalists (civic or ethnic, however you want to characterise them) turned inward and rejected Bourassa's more enlightened position.

This is pure politics. The Conservative motion was made to head off the Conservative MPs from Quebec who would have had to vote for the Bloc Quebecois motion to save their seats. This is an airy motion; many Quebecois are a nation but only in their own minds, not in their own country. It is a meaningless motion, actually less than meaningless as it is really an insult to the Quebecois in that they are being taken for fools.

    It is... really.
Peach hit right on the nail...;)

Being my self a French Canadian I'm getting kind of fed up with that whole debate.... Not that I don't like my origin but it really seems like we've been debating this idea of an Independant Quebec for too many years.

There was a time were I would vote head first for an independant Quebec "NATION"... as I firmly beleive that Quebec would survive very well as an independant country....

But that is not the point right... The sole point is to find out if we really want to remain in Canada or manage our own buisness. As of today, I haven't got the proof that Quebec leaders can effectively manage the Province properly. We have a high debt to support and most Quebec nationnalist would blame Canadian Governement for that situation.

I'd be really interested to see one day the Canada sit down in front of Quebecquers and tell them out and loud....

"You guys want to leave???? Let's do it!!!! ".

We'de be surprise(as of today) how many people would stop fighting and screaming.

When your son is 18 and over... able to walk and talk.... able to decide by himself also.... It's not all that bad that the parents let him go so he can go see life on his own.

As you know quite a few are coming back home after a while and are more appreciative of the parental house once they've experimented life on their own.

This motion will actually create more animosity between Quebecquers and the rest of their Canadians fellow... as Quebecquers will now think that we are "special" since we are considered as a NATION. I think the rest of Canada will eventually get fed up with our little teenagers crisis!
