Yeah, you can put in extensions if you want. What happens, one you put in an extension your name moves along like it should on the patrol list but your just not eligible to go out to a station until you take off the extension.
People put in extensions for a number of reasons (college, family, or just plain not ready ready to go out to patrol). But eventually you have to go out to patrol. Like i said it could take from 6 months to 6 or 7 years depending what stations you put in for.

Personally the OT is pretty good, i do 8 to 16 hours per week. The schedule that i have is (3) 8 hour days and (1) 16 hour day with 3 days off. It also depends what facility you work at. Right now at my facilty its getting more and more difficult to get hired for OT, we have had a lot of new personel over the last few weeks so that's fewer OT spots.

LASD does not have jursidiction over LAPD, we have our area we patrol and they have theirs. Pay was an issue but with their last contract they are starting to get better pay. They also have the 3-12 work week. For me, i never even considered LASD, every month there are a ton of deputies coming over to LAPD because they are tired of working the jail waiting for a spot to open up in patrol. Although i will say that Baca seems to back his officers a lot more than Bratton does.

Wow are there really a lot of LASD deputies that have been working in the jail for a long time, and end up applying and working for LAPD because they are not be transferred to work patrol fast enough?

LASD is not the only place that is happening. I am a Deputy up here on the Central Coast, we have the same problems. Many Deputies up here leave to go to places like Salinas, Gilroy, Seaside, or other Sheriff's Departments where you don't have to do jail time. In Santa Cruz County they have correctional officers working their jail instead of Deputies. Their Deputies go right out to the street right from the police academy.

At a recent job fair held here in Los Angeles at the Convention Center both Las Vegas Metro and Phoenix PD had recruitment banners up saying, "Get out of Jail!" - specifically targeting LA County Sheriffs.

Do they offer any training before they hit patrol? 6-7 years is a long time to remember everything you learned in the academy.
