Every person including LEO's and CJ Majors should read this book:

    What Cops Know.

It's been sitting in my backpack for the past month and a half and recently at work I decided to open it and take a look at it. WOW is all I can say. I am NOT a book person but I have been glued to it since when I opened it.

Its where the author, Connie Fletcher interviews 125 Active and Retired Chicago PD Officers, Detectives etc. She asked for 130 and only 5 refused. They would go out to dinner or meet somewhere and just talk. Everything in quotes are word for word. Each officer was allowed to look at prior to publishing and nobody made any complaints. The book is VERY VERY BLUNT. I love it.

Its based in Chicagos 6th District, which is a very bad poor on one side of town and very rich on the other. The stories in here are VERY graphic and very detailed. No censorship in here.

The book goes from to gay lovers that got into a fight and one shoved the microphone up the others rectum and dies to an officer gets called for two suspicious males on an empty business street and when he arrives each kid is only wearing one glove. One has the right glove on, and the other one has the left glove on. It was winter but it wasn't that cold. Well i'm not going to blow this story but all I will say is the officer is very lucky.

I really think everyone should read this book. It tells you as it is. All the paperwork, all the BS, all the homicides etc.

I rate it 10/10. Best book I have ever read and I am only half way through it!!

Read it when it first came out.

I have her next book "Pure Cop" (c 1991) sitting on the bookshelf beside it, but haven't read that one yet. In it she interviewed Chicago special Units, bomb squad, etc.

I've been reading a lot of current affairs type books lately, but I'll get back to my bookshelf someday.

Since we are on the topic of required reading for LEOs and LEO family, check out The Will to Survive by Bobby Smith.

Bobby was a state trooper in Louisiana and was shot in the face, blinding him. He has traveled the world, speaking on all aspects of LE. He is amazing. I was told of his book when I went through mandatory "decompression" training after returning home from Iraq. I saw him speak last month. AMAZING. Get the book, it is a must-have.

Just finished it during some downtime (over several days) in dispatch... Another dispatcher turned me on to it, mentioned that it was recommended to her by one of the officers who also used to work the radio. Very good book, IMHO.
