New Haven officer severely injured in accident



(New Haven-WTNH, Oct. 17, 2006 10:00 PM) _ A veteran of the New Haven police force has been severely injured in an accident.

The officer injured in the accident is known around town simply as Officer Dan. Dan Pacagli is at Yale New Haven Hospital and listed in critical condition.

News Channel 8 is told he has very serious head injuries after being hit by a vehicle on Chapel Street.

It happened at 6:30 p.m. in the middle of a downpour.

Police tell us that two officers were working extra duty directing traffic at that construction project on Chapel Street near Wooster Square.

They are milling the road there.

Police say a small black SUV struck Officer Pacagli.

The Police Chief says Pacagli is an 18-year-veteran who has worked tirelessly for children in this city.

"Danny is the face of community policing. He is a youth oriented police officer. He is our PAL athletic league director of all of our PAL programs year round. He was a school resource officer when the first school resource officers were implemented in New Haven about 10 years ago in the Fair haven Middle School, one of the schools that had the most challenges at the time. He was also involved with the Young Adult Board of Commissioners," says Chief Francisco Ortiz. "This is a remarkable individual and we are lucky to have him.

This accident is under investigation. The police department is asking the public to pray for his recovery.

New Haven police officer hit by SUV critical


(New Haven-WTNH, Oct. 18, 2006 Updated 6:02 PM) _ A New Haven police officer remained in critical condition Wednesday night after he was struck by an SUV at a construction site.

Officials for Yale-New Haven Hospital say it is quite clear that Officer Dan Picagli has many friends on the police force. There has been a steady stream of men and women in blue since the 17-year-veteran was admitted to the hospital Tuesday night.

Around 6:30 p.m. Picagli was on traffic detail in Wooster Square at DePalma Court and Chapel Street when he was struck by an SUV.

The driver stopped after the accident and is cooperating with police. Police have not publicly identified the driver, but the New Haven Register reports the driver of the SUV is Judge John M. Walker, who serves on the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals and who stepped down as chief judge this month.

Meanwhile, as Officer Picagli lies in critical condition at Yale-New Haven Hospital, his family is seeing a large support system in the form of the New Haven police department. Dozens of officers have kept a continued vigil as his family prays for a speedy recovery. Tragedy is something this department is used to.

"We've been down this road before," Chief Francisco Ortiz said. "Tragically enough we've had other officers experience life-threatening injuries in the last several years."

Officer Picagli is well known for working with kids and community policing. He is 38 and has three children.
