New Haven officer severely injured in accident
(New Haven-WTNH, Oct. 17, 2006 10:00 PM) _ A veteran of the New Haven police force has been severely injured in an accident.
The officer injured in the accident is known around town simply as Officer Dan. Dan Pacagli is at Yale New Haven Hospital and listed in critical condition.
News Channel 8 is told he has very serious head injuries after being hit by a vehicle on Chapel Street.
It happened at 6:30 p.m. in the middle of a downpour.
Police tell us that two officers were working extra duty directing traffic at that construction project on Chapel Street near Wooster Square.
They are milling the road there.
Police say a small black SUV struck Officer Pacagli.
The Police Chief says Pacagli is an 18-year-veteran who has worked tirelessly for children in this city.
"Danny is the face of community policing. He is a youth oriented police officer. He is our PAL athletic league director of all of our PAL programs year round. He was a school resource officer when the first school resource officers were implemented in New Haven about 10 years ago in the Fair haven Middle School, one of the schools that had the most challenges at the time. He was also involved with the Young Adult Board of Commissioners," says Chief Francisco Ortiz. "This is a remarkable individual and we are lucky to have him.
This accident is under investigation. The police department is asking the public to pray for his recovery.
