    Buy your own gun!

I just got hired in Decatur, IL and they make you buy your own duty weapon. Is this pretty common? I thought they would just issue me Glock or something.

I rectum you should have checked before you applied/got hired. Assuming is a bad thing to do in Law Enforcement.

I would say it is probably 50/50 on issue vs officer supplied guns.

Quite a few places make you buy your own. Especially up north.

Yeah Decatur does that. We get issued in Mt. Zion with the option of buying our own. I went with my own.

    And hey neighbor.

Personally I think if I had the option of carrying my personal choice I would take it. I am issued a Glock (which is fine), but I would not be carrying it if they let me pick my duty weapon. Sometimes different guns are better for different people. There are advantages and disadvantages to both (issue vs personal choice). Don't be cheap. Get a good weapon that you are good with.

I bought the XD 45 for work. After looking at my budget, getting a million opinions, reading a thousand reviews, and seeing what was available, I went with the XD. I qualified with 9mm Beretta when I was in the Army, but I don't know much about guns. Hopefully this one will work out well.

We haven't been issuing guns all that long. It really wasn't that big a deal, we could buy them through the city and escape all the federal taxes, etc.

Hell son, back in MY day ('95..we walked uphill to barfights, both ways) I not only had to buy my PISTOL (HK USP .45 :D ) but they made us buy our own BELT--holster, cuffs, ALL of it. I hadda drop 800 bones right out the gates.

Ah, those were simpler times. Bread was a nickel a loaf and your mother and I still had full heads of hair.

You kids think you know everything. STAY OUTTA MY FLOWERBEDS

Buying your own gun RULES. I miss carrying my Hunter-Killer. *sigh*

We have to buy our own...and I LOVE it. I carry what I want. If I don't like how it shoots I sell it and get something else.

I think I found "the one" this year with my Sig P220R DAK.
