A Camp Lejeune Marine was charged with murder Wednesday after the 9-month-old baby he was accused of abusing died at Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville after being removed from life support.
Daniel Thomas Whitehill, 20, of Batchelor Road in Richlands, is still in Onslow County jail under no bond.
Whitehill, the live-in boyfriend of the baby’s mother, was babysitting the 9-month-old boy Sept. 24 while the mother was at work. He called the mother to tell her the child was bleeding from the nose. When she got home, she called 911.
The baby was taken to Onslow Memorial Hospital and then transferred to Pitt Memorial Hospital where he remained on life support until Tuesday at about 1 p.m., said Onslow County Sheriff Ed Brown.
“It saddens us to report that the child died about eight hours later,” Brown said.
Whitehill was initially arrested Sept. 26 and charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious as well as felony child abuse causing serious bodily injuries. Whitehill is accused of slamming the child’s head against a crib, lifting the baby off the floor by his legs and then hitting his head against the floor, according to warrants.
The infant received two skull fractures, a broken nose, broken jaw and multiple bruises, according to warrants.
The 9-month-old boy was one of three infants brought to Onslow Memorial Hospital the weekend of Sept. 23-24 as a result of alleged abuse. A 6-week-old male also died and an autopsy report revealed he was abused. An 18-day-old female had multiple bruises on her body and swelling of her brain. She was also transferred to Pitt Memorial Hospital.
Authorities are still investigating both incidents, Brown said.

My friend's nephew's name was Nathaniel. He was 9 months old. Please keep him and all children in your prayers. I saw pics of this innocent little boy with tubes coming out of his mouth and nose while he was alive in the hospital. He had a large bruise on his head.
It's the worst thing I"ve ever had to see pics of.
