    VSP week 13 (FTO)

The first week wasn't bad. There is only so much one can do in a small country town. Believe it or not everyone pretty much obeys the law around here.

We did have a bank robbery up here yesterday so the first part of my shift was dealing with that. Then we had a pretty good 10-50 on top of the mountain. All the deputies say that I can't come home anymore, I bring too much work for them to do:rolleyes: . I told them I was sorry for making them have to look for their vests and come out of the offices.:D I know them all so it's all good with the jokes.

How does this work while you are on FTO but still in the academy? Do you take enforcement action (are you fully commissioned) while on FTO or is there some other arrangement?

At any rate, keep it up - I've been following your progress since day one
    Meh.

    Thanks,

We were sworn in on family day before heading out to FTO. We do have all the powers (while on duty) to enforce the law. Next week it will be back to the academy for another 17 weeks of the fun stuff. Pretty much all the classroom stuff was during the first half. Now we get to the driving, shooting, practicals, and more shooting.

I try not to think how they get away with having us out there, it gives me a headache. We are sworn, but not really Troopers until we take our State exam in Jan-Feb. Weird, I know.....

So are you carrying right now unqualified? Seems as though some practicals first would be nice since you're on the street. Well whatever happens good luck with it all. Almost the homestretch.

They are DCJS qualified prior to probating in the middle of academy. They have already qualified with their issued firearms; however, after returning to academy they get to shoot additional courses of fire.

Go west of where I am..............way west and you will find something more unusual. DCJS says you have a year from date of hire to get certified. Many agencies think that mean you can work ON YOUR OWN as a police officer for a year. That means alone........by yourself................no FTO

When I was in the acadmey several individuals said that they were only in the acadamy when they were because their year was up. Also several said that after their interview with their sheriff/cheif they handed them a gun and told them to be at work the next night at 2100. And they never had a FTO, EVER. Kinda scary when you think about it.

To be honest I never had an FTO, started off with beach work, then moved to regular patrol, taught myself, sergeant trusted me. Then again backup and a second hand was always under two minutes away If anything was out of my ability someone with plenty more experience was over my shoulder.
