    How would one join SWAT?

How would i get into the NYC SWAT team?

is it like when you apply for a regular police job or do you have to be selected?

Each agency has its own transfer procedure. But, you have to be a Cop before you can specialize.

One can only be so Open Minded before all that mind **** spills out, stains and ruins everything.

    NYPD doesnt have SWAT.....
They have E.S.U....Sorry just felt like saying that. And the selection process is very tough. They have tons of people requesting to go there and only the best of the best make it. I think their up to about 400 cops on ESU...

Generally speaking (again, each agency can be different):

1.) Get hired as a police officer.
2.) Do an outstanding job while on patrol your first day.
3.) Repeat daily for 3-5 years.
4.) Stay in shape during 1-3
5.) Apply when an opening occurs.

Everybody starts on the street. Learn how to be a good cop first, practice "Traditional Weapons and Tactics" (Acronym censored :D ).

THEN worry about the "Special Weapons and Tactics".

    Good Luck-

It's not impossible but it is very difficult. You have to prove yourself every day on the street. You need to demonstrate you are cool under pressure, mature, a team player, able to take constructive criticism and apply it, can write detailed, good reports, and you have to show you are very reliable. If you can do that as a patrol officer you will have a good chance of getting onto SWAT.

Do a search on the topic and you will find a wealth of information from every Tom, ****, and Harry who wants to skip patrol and go straight after kicking in doors and wielding supressed MP-5's while hurling flashbang grenades.

They all tell you to prove yourself on the street first, walk before you crawl.

    Yes, I believe that ESU is;

    Emergency Services Unit.

Also not only do you have to prove your self in "patrol" work but you must be in top condition. The PT required is extreamly demanding.

ESU is SWAT for NYC. However, correct me if im wrong ppl from other states who have SWAT, but ESU responds to EDPS (Emotionally disabled persons) and also serve as units who can assist medically. Do other SWAT units have these responsibilities??

I may be wrong, but I believe you have to have five years on the job in order to apply.
