Repeat DUIs Associated With Mental Illnesses

    I found this interesting.........

FRIDAY, Sept. 22 (HealthDay News) -- More than half of repeat DUI offenders suffer from at least one mental illness, say researchers from the Pacific Institute for Research and Evaluation (PIRE).

A new study published in the September issue of the Journal of Studies on Alcohol looked at people who had been convicted of at least two DUI (driving under the influence) offenses in the past 10 years.

The researchers found that almost 60 percent of the participants reported experiencing major depression, bipolar disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, or post-traumatic stress disorder over their lifetime, in addition to a drug or alcohol-use disorder.

"People who deal with drug and alcohol abusers need to understand there are often other disorders that need to be dealt with as well," Sandra Lapham, principal investigator of the study, said in a prepared statement. "That's why we need to screen repeat offenders for multiple disorders."

    More information:

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration has more about substance abuse treatment services.

I believe alcoholism is a mental illness, so I guess that study could be true. We don't allow people with Parkinsons to be surgeons, why allow drunks to drive? Both are privledges.

I think they were referring more to the following disorders:

major depression, bipolar disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, or post-traumatic stress disorder over their lifetime, in addition to a drug or alcohol-use disorder.

I can't disagree with the stupid and selfish part, but according to this study there might be more to it............at least for 60% of them.

    Bottom line

They spent a lot of taxpayers money to determine that
drunks have no self control. WOW:rolleyes:

Of course the study I like,
was the one that said EVERYONE in the world had
a disability. Of course the study was done by those
who have an interest ($) in helping those with disabilities.

I live in a college town. If you sit downtown on a friday/saturday night, you will see a LOT of college kids leaving the bars DRUNK and driving home. Do you think 60 % of them have a mental issue as well?

Since they are college students, I doubt that they have fully matured yet, so it makes it a little tougher to call.
