What are the chances that in 2-3 years NYPD's STARTING salary will be increased? I know right now its only $25,000 for the first year but i read somewhere on these forums there is supposed to be a new contract coming into place.

THe city's latest proposal calls for 3.15 & 3.0 % raises over 2 years, and an equivalent raise for the rookies (including increased take home of about 10k) but including the redution of vacation days from 20 to 10 until you reach top pay, when it will jump to 27, and reduction of holiday pay from 11 days/year to 6 days/year until you reach top pay. In other words They want to give you the same 3.15 & & 3.0% and then make you work an extra 15 days/year and make you pay for your own raise that way.
The city filed an enpass, and we are on our way to binding arbitration, and won't expect to see a contract for about anohter year. Our last contract also expired 2 years ago, so we'll be a year behind when we do finally get a 2 year contract 1 year from now.

One of the most expensive cities to live in pays their police 25K a year?
yea...im considering the MTA Police. I was just reading there website and they start out at $33,000 a year and the minimum age is 20, not 21 which means when i get my associates degree i can go straight to work without having to wait a year to start. They also only work 4 days a week, granted 10 hour shifts. But you get 3 days off every week, unless you want OT.
I think what im going to do is work at MTA Police if i get the opportunity when i turn 20 until i turn 21, then decide if i want it to be my career, or if i need more excitement and move on to NYPD which will hopefully have a higher salary by then.

MTA interests me, but its almost like your a security guard instead of a cop...anyone work as a transit cop? What is it like? Is it a boring job?
Obviously you dont work outside which seems like it would get irritating.
EDIT: How do you apply for New York City's MTA Police?

First of all Good luck getting that MTA job you and thousands of others waiting for the next test in 2008. Next, they now work three 12 hour shifts instead of four 10 hour days and make up the extra day every three weeks. Next they are full police officers in New York and have secondary Special police status in Connectict as well, so they are far from security guards. If you did get the job and later transfered to NYPD youd be the craziest person I know. Everyone from NYPD tries to get the MTA because they have a much and i stress MUCH better contract, pay, health and UNLIMITED sick leave. One of my best friends is a MTA K9 cop and he was originally NYPD. Another buddy of mine is a Det Sgt. for them and another friend of mine is a patrol Sgt. There job is far from boring and i would take it in a heartbeat.
P.S. Transit cops refers to NYPD officers who are assigned to the Transit bureau which means they patrol subways. Same idea diffrent turf, diffrent agency.
Good Luck with it or whatever else you do
Wow, thats even better...4 days off!?! Yea so you make up the one day every 3 weeks, so what! ill work 12 hour shifts 3 days a week to have 4 days off. Even when you do make up the day, you still get 3 days off! And you still make more money than NYPD!!! Thats awesome.
So the test is in 2008? What month, cause i wont be 20 until July 2008. What are the chances of getting a job with MTA? How to apply? Any more info on MTA Police?
thanks
No month or exact day is set yet but prob around Nov. 2008 . As Far as chances go you have the fact that your young working for you. Get good grades , stay out of any trouble, get as much positive backing as you can like volunteer work and any other positive actions you can put down on your resume or application thats what matters. passing the test is the easy part of the battle , getting through the rest of the process is the hard part. And my number one piece of advice is STAY OUT OF TROUBLE.. there will be many candidates going up against you so try to be the better candidate with the spotless backround. And the age doesnt matter when you take the test as long as your old enough when they process/hire you. If you have free time join Aux police in your neighborhood or Explorers thats great backround info and a good referal when your investigated. Plus you get first hand police education. Im not an officer but ive been through the process in Suffolk county and my buddies are MTA cops so I hope the info I dished out helps you regardless what agency you apply to. Its basically the same concept in most of the country some places harder than others.Originally Posted by ironmike9110

Just dont get into any more and you should be fine. That fact that it was before 18 means nothing in this business just stay clean and be very carefull of anything showing diregard for the law. Even traffic tickets...Verified's might chime in soon and give you some more info as well.
Man, this job sounds amazing! What do you think i should do to get a better resume?
You reccomended Aux Police, what is that?
Should i go to my Community College's Police Academy? Im not sure if i would get college credits for it tho...
25k in NYC? How is it even possible to live off 25k a year in that part of the country?
Move south.
Nashville is doing some serious hiring and pay starts at 32k during the academy. Within one year of being hired you make 43k with a bachelors degree plus OT. Cost of living is a fraction of what it is in the north.
