I'm sure police cars spend alot more time idleing (and hard driving) than a vehicle under normal driving conditions - which will affect MPG - but how much do you guys get in your cars? No reason for this question other than blind curiosity.

I don't know from experience what cruisers get, but I think I read somewhere they're estimated at about 10-12 mpg, due to idling a lot, and a lot of hard driving and accelerating, and, of course, continuous A/C usage.
I have a 97 Crown Vic and I get about 25-26 mpg on the highway (with A/C on), but then, I'm not an officer driving a police car.

I think we get like 8 mpg in our explorers. Lots of stop and go driving.

Thanks. Now I can go on, wondering about other useless info.![]()

The average for our agency is about 14mpg. My issued 97' combined city/highway mileage is about 16mpg.
The new impalas that we have have an estimated MPG device, and it's about 4-5 MPG, BUT this is NYC, and there's a lot of idling, and slow traffic.

Saturday night I drove 50 mi. on half a tank in a 1999 or 2000 Crown Vic with 116XXX mi.
I have no idea how many gallons the tank is

approx 16g tank. so 8 gal = 50 miles = about 6 MPG.
All rough approximations of course.

6 MPG, thats impressive. I wonder how it would do if we didn't run code 3 as much or blast the A/C all night.Originally Posted by phantasm

I'm in the same ballpark as the rest of the responses. Somewhere under 10mpg. If I go to court, I might average out the tank to 12mpg, because it is all highway driving for me to get there. But just in my city under 10mpg, sometimes less if I spend a long time at a scene with the car running.
This isn't Burger King, you are not going to get it your way.
Today I ran 60 miles on exactly 3 gallons of gas. This was all highway driving with no idling. On a normal shift I will get about 120 miles on a half tank which is about 8 gallons so it's a bit lower in the city. This is with a 2001 with 76000 miles. Oddly enough it gets MUCH better gas mileage than my 2003 or 1999 did. It is almost as much as my 1997 got.

They've got us surrounded? Good. Now we can fire in any direction, those bastards wont get away this time

Since I don't pay for my fuel, I really do not care what the MPG is. I have never even thought about it before reading this thread.;)
I'm surprised you're the first person to say that.Originally Posted by Jay7376
