What I've learned from Real Police....

First and foremost, thank you. I’ve learned two critical things from this forum, and I’d like to share them with you.

    First -
I posted a thread a while ago about the proper steps a citizen can take when they see things happen that would likely need the attention of Law Enforcement. I remember one response saying to remember CYMBALS when recording information about what is seen.

I was behind an SUV at a stoplight, saw the male passenger barking (you know…how someone’s head looks when they’re yelling at someone) at the female driver. He stops talking for a second, then comes with a fist to her head. . .and continues to hit her so hard that the SUV starts rocking side to side (so much so that it looked like the thing would tip over). I can hear her screaming while he’s hitting her – then I noticed the kids in the backseat. :( I remembered CYMBALS, called 911 and told them what I saw. Luckily, a LEO was in the area and actually passed me to get to this vehicle. (I didn’t follow the SUV. We were going the same direction.)

I understand the reality that this woman may not press charges, but if she did need/want help, she got it fast. Out of curiosity…should this go any further, can I give my statement/testimony anonymously?

Thank you. Knowing CYMBALS makes me feel empowered, and I promise to use that advice prudently.

    Second-
At first, I was taken aback by the brutal honesty on this forum. But, as time has passed, I have come to admire that trait. So much so that I’ve adopted an indirect sort of brutal honesty. I come in contact with so many people that are unwilling to be accountable for their actions and look to place the blame for their shortcomings on others. I used to not get involved so as to not create conflict (and sometimes, that’s still the case). But, I’ve learned to do one of two things. Either don’t even put myself in a situation with people I know will ***** and whine about the actions that THEY chose OR throw back my (tactful) $.02 when the b***ing starts to be sure it’s clear that excuses don’t play out well with me. I’m sure that could use some ‘splainin, but I’ll save it.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m no gunslinger. I just don’t think I have to accept the BS that some people give. I've even adopted one of your quotes into my personal philosophy, Creeker....Tolerance=The language claimed by those who have no moral compass.

Just wanted y’all to know and to thank you for it….

Just because some of us may be brutally honest on here at times in regards to police issues, there's a time and a place for it, as you have found out. If your wife/GF asks if she looks fat, that is NOT the time to be brutally honest. lol. But if someone asks you for advice, and its not what they want to hear, it doesn't make you wrong.

Yes, definitely a time and place. "Do I look fat" is ALWAYS a sign to turn on the 'white-lies'. :D

No you can not give a sworn statement anonymously, and obviously, you can't testify in court anonymously.

As to the rest, I'm glad to hear you are able to change your outlook and views, many people aren't capable of that.

I did a search of the boards, and got nothing. What is the CYMBALS referring to? I'm assuming it's an acronym for what to do/observe while witnessing an incident?

I have my township's PD number speed dialed into my phone.. I seem to get caught behind drunk drivers alot. Whenever I see a vehicle, I remember the license plate number first. Its easiest for me, and probably the PD because the registration info would come up when they run the plate, right? :p
