Trooper hit by passing truck
NORTH PORT -- A Florida Highway Patrol trooper struck by a truck Wednesday during a traffic stop is recovering at Bayfront Medical Center in Tampa.
Richard S. Titus, 30, suffered broken legs, a broken bone in his right arm, a dislocated elbow and facial injuries. He underwent surgery Wednesday evening, according to FHP Sgt. Lane Stidham.
"It will be a while before he's back on the road," he said.
Titus lives with his wife and son in North Port. He joined the FHP six months ago after leaving the Marines.
Titus was inspecting a sod truck on Interstate 75 near River Road when Apolinar Castro, 60, of Brownsville, Texas, drove his Ford Ranger -- which towed another Ford Ranger on a rebar -- into the left lane and lost control, according to the FHP.
Castro overcorrected and veered onto the right shoulder, slamming into Titus, who was thrown into the air and hit the second Ford, according to the FHP.
Castro was charged with careless driving, no proof of insurance and faulty equipment for driving with bald tires. Investigators said there was no indication of drugs or alcohol in the wreck.
Though an investigation is ongoing and may take up to a month, investigators don't foresee further charges.
"Unless we find something different," said Sgt. Tim Underhill, "there probably won't be any more charges."
According to the FHP, drivers in Florida crashed into working law enforcement vehicles that were stopped or parked on the roadside 1,793 times between 1996 and 2000, resulting in five deaths and 419 injuries. Those statistics contributed to the creation of the "Move Over Act" in 2002, which requires motorists to move out of the lane closest to a stopped emergency vehicle and slow down to 20 mph below the posted speed limit.
