WAR BAG - What do you carry?

I have a family friend that is an 18-year veteran of the LA County Sheriff's Department. He now works in the gang detail and has been assigned to areas such as Compton. He has a lot of street experience.

When I got hired, he sat me down an explained 'The War Bag'. He says he always carries an extra bay in the trunk with at least 7 extra magazines and other miscellaneous ammo. This is in addition to the standard 2 extra mags that most departments carry on their belts.

I went out and bought a sling pack and 3 extra mags for my Glock 17. My friend would consider this very anemic. They are filled with ammo along with additional pepper spray and zip ties for mast arrest. I also have extra buckshot and slugs. There is extra food and water in there, too.

I took a lot of crap from my academy mates 3 years ago when I bought this stuff. I quickly picked up the nickname "Tackleberry". Since being on the streets, I see very few officers have war bags, but there are some that take preparedness seriously and it's no laughing matter.

These same officers that made fun in the academy (nobody has made fun on the street) are now beginning to add a second dual magazine pouches to the back of their duty belts. This is a new thing that is not widespeard throughout the department. I do not know why they do it and guess it may have to do with the rise in gang shootings in the city now. I don't really want to do this because the additional weight is tremondous.

I usually carry my sling pack when protests heat up or we go up to condition orange. Anyone else use a war bag, and if so, what are it's contents?

I just carry an extra brick of 50 rounds in my bag with 2 extra sets of handcuffs in addition to the two I alread carry on my belt. Then of course, I carry my back up weapon on my ankle.

But I work for a county that has the entire population of the county at 6700 were the men roam free and the goats hide LOL :D So there really isn't much of a need for a war bag... Atleast I hope not.

Dont worry about people laughing at you or giving you stupid names, there is an old saying here- "its better to be looking at it than for it" so if you dont need it then great, but if you do I bet you would be glad you had put a bit of thought into your equipment. There is no such concept as having too much ammunition.

Since there has been little replies to this thread I'll add my two cents..... My war bag consists of........
    1. Three elk calls, one big bull, a cow and a calf and a smaller bull elk.
    2. I have several sents, cow elk in estreus and some assorted bull urines.. along with some great bear lure.
    3. I also have a bear cub in distress call that I really like and gets them bears running in...
    4. I have a deer grunt that is actually several calls in one, I can always get into a grunting match with a buck during the rut.
    5. Night vision and GPS along with my trusty compass and several fire making devices... Almost forgot an extra mini maglight.
    6. An extra release for my bow, just in case....
    7. An extra spray bottle of human scent be gone along with some fresh earth scent wafers.
    8. A small locking blade knife to supplement my Kershaw which is worn on a tactical thigh holster that also carries my axe...
    9. Can't forget my lincense and tags!!!
Sorry but I had to get this out of me as opening day for deer and elk is this Saturday!!!!!!!!

Remington 870 with 20 rounds and an AR-15 with 120 rounds. Extra plasticuffs, a big pepper fogger, spraypaint, tape measure, hand tools, pocket knife, halogen bar, 100 ft of rope, barrier tape and extra .40 ammo for my Glock 23.

Looks like you are set MSCAP. - I will be sure never to mess with you while you are armed ;)

This reminds me of my brothers bachelor party. Think 15 off duty CHP officers drinking and watching porno's in a suite near Union Square. One of my bro's friends had his 9mm off duty on a shoulder holster wth 4 clips. I guess he was ready for anything - problem was, he was drinking to. When hotel security showed up due to excessive noise, this officer answered with this gun showing, a beer in his hand, and his badge on his belt. I bet that made a good impression.

Zendik - do you get anything? I have never had much luck hunting or fishing. Of course my former brother in law is the type that shoots his limit every time.. Damn luck... (or skill?) Are you allowed to wear night vision goggles to hunt? Seems kinda unfair - lol

In addition to stuff already mentioned, throw in some medical gear (a small bag for entries and a larger trauma bag), some NVGs, extra rounds for my M4 and handguns (a few more rounds than mscap mentoned) , a couple CS grenades, goretex rain gear, chem lights, and plenty of other SRT gear... and I think I am covered.

So far I have harvested 7 deer (3 bucks and 4 does), three cow elk and a bear. If your former brother in law fills his tags every year that would be skill, for sure! I wish I could!! I only have the monoculars and they are for when I'm in a tree stand all night long and when I'm after bear. I'll start hanging out in a tree by this orchard I know of where bears frequent, if I am quiet and not to smelly I can zero in on where he comes from at dusk then I can nail him at legal shooting hours, if that makes sense..... Last year, I admit I was to scared to shoot this beast of a bear that I stalked, I would be having dinner with Ted Nugent if I had nailed this monster. The odds of me getting killed are in favor of the bear when I have only a bow! I also have first aid stuff with me but only basic stuff.
