    Bank of America Shootout

I was at a training course today for emergency management and the instructor showed a short video on the Bank of America shootout that happened in North Hollywood in 1997 (I think???)

Does anyone know of a website where I can get a copy of the video and/or the audio from the radio broadcasts??? I was going to get a copy from my instructor but his copy is really crap and not very clear (its a copy of a copy of a copy etc)

I was so surprised to see so many police get injured and was even more surprised when the police had to go to a local gun shop to get better weapons!!!

If anyone could help I would be really appreciative. I want to show it to other less experienced officers because I am having trouble getting them to stay alert and use correct Officer Safety principles. I went to a domestic the other day and my partner (junior to me) did not even take his portable (which was in the car). When I asked why he was not taking it he replied that I had mine and if I was injured or in a fight he could use his mobile phone to call help. Needless to say I was very unimpressed. I hope by showing these officers videos and constantly hounding them that it may rub off, so when they are the senior person in charge of a new officer they will be safe and be able to conduct their duties efficiently.

If anyone has any other stories, videos or sound files I would love to hear them. Although in Australia it is pretty tame compared to America, a drunken 6 " footballer is still a force to be reckoned with!!!

    Thanks

    Aussie

    Aussie,
Give that rookie 10 minutes alone with me, and I'll change his mind.
FYI - doing a search on the "North Hollywood Shootout" will bring up gazillions of hits.
I know Amazon.com sells VHS tapes of the scene, etc. They were only $15 (US) when I checked... plus they have used ones for as little as $3 (US).

I assisted with training for armored car guards a few years ago. We also showed videos of gunfights and robberies caught on surveillence cams, etc... we were trying to make it an "eye opener". I have the N.Hollywood shoot out on vid but its basically all the stuff you have seen already. The other video compilation is stored at the company. It is very interesting to watch and god forbid anyone who has to go through that...

    GMan,
It appears to me that aussie didn't get the full experience of the shootout. It might be enough to show that rookie to get him off his lazy a$$ and watch his own back! :D

Hollywood Shootout DVD for sale at discovery.com

Hollywood Shootout VHS for sale at discovery.com

Hopefully this link works. If not, go to Discovery.com and search for 'officer down'. It's a 100 minute video on the North Hollywood Shootout that aired on the Discovery Channel. I saw it. It's really good.

    Metallicat,
Heat came out before the shootout. The movie is where the criminals got the idea. An extreme example of life imitating art.

Gee hanks guys for all the help!!!!

I looked at that Trooper Coates lesson plan and I think I will run through it informally whilst I am working with new "rookies" and hopefully we can all learn from this.

I ordered the video, cant wait to get it and see the whole story. I only saw a clip that ran for about 3 minutes. I was surprised that the cops didnt have the firepower though...

If a similar incident happened here, it would take probably at least an hour for our tactical team to arrive and by that time just about everyone would be dead!!! Not to mention only a couple of officers (I am one) wear body armour. No one wants to wear it becasue they think they are a "wimp" or "*****" if they do, not to mention the stuff we are issued is Gen 3 ad is bulky, hot and sags after about an hour.

    Thanks again

Well, the rumor was that the two "fools" watched the movie HEAT constantly. Before they did their heist they watched the famous scene over and over and over again to hype themselves up. When detectives went to the apt of one of those guys the movie was in the VCR. When they pressed play it started up AFTER the famous scene. Family members explained that they both were obsessed with the movie.

Did anyone see 44minutes on FX? It was the movie about the N.Hollywood incident. It wasn't bad. They aired that movie a bunch of times because it was such a hit.

The amount of suppressive fire those two were spitting out at the cops was amazing. Basically it was all out war. A 7.62x39 round can cut through 7 car doors. The "ak-47's" they were using may not have been the most accurate of battle rifles but they sure could destroy a lot. They also used an HK 91 in .308 in full auto - that thing uses an even larger round. I don't know any LE Agency that would be prepared for such violence. Imagine if there was a group of criminals who used FN-FAL's, M-4s, AK's, HK91. I mean rifles that can spit out hundreds of rounds per minute of large caliber rounds.... thank god not many criminals own these rifles (95% use handguns) but... what if...

I tell ya, if one LAPO were able to get a head shot with their 9mm it would have ended it sooner. But the amount of suppressive fire they had to face - no one could get a headshot.

I believe a shot to the head finally killed one of the bad guys when he got into the neighborhood. Officer hit him in the brainstem.

The incident caused changes with armament and the deployment of AR-15's.

Our department began deploying AR-15's with specially trained road officers. Every shift has several. When I went through familiarity training, they demonstrated the round. They put a kevlar vest over a watermelon. The round penetrated the vest with no expansion and went into the watermelon. There was no exit from the watermelon.

We had our first shooting with one of the guns 2 years ago. The officer double-tapped a guy from 50 feet. Both rounds when in the same opening in the chest. The guy stopped moving within 5 seconds.

The mortality rate of being hit with this round in the chest is 90% compared with 15% for a handgun round. Plus, a handgun round won't penetrate a vest (with exceptions).

The N Hollywood incident video is bragging rights for the officers of the LAPD and rightfully so. I was always told "adapt and overcome" These guys faced the situation head on, never backing down and we won!!!

Our department began AR-15 program to sargeants, and now they have tasers.. I dont know about you guys, but my sarg sits behind a desk
