He keeps looking over his shoulder at another dude running after him. The other dude isn't keeping up so well. I'm pretty certain even the FBI would figure this is a clue. So being the street cop I am I run across the street and intercept the trailing dude and yelled, "What did he do?" The guy says, "He stole from the store!"

Yeah boy! The chase is on, now I'm like a dumb dog chasing the mail truck down the street. The suspect is running up a hill into an alley and I follow. I'm dialing 911 on my cell phone figuring I can keep the dude in sight until uniforms show up. I get about 50 feet from him and he stops and spins around facing me. He starts shaking his shirt and 15 packages of steak fall out. I'm not sure if he's unencumbering himself to fight me or pull a weapon so I draw down on him with my concealed duty gun.

I yell, "Police! Get on the ground! Get on the ground NOW!"

He stops and lays down and I yell for him to show me his hands and he complies proning out for me.

I got dispatch on the line and tell them I'm off duty and have a shoplifter at gun point. Uniforms already got the call for the shoplifter and a citizen with a gun call from the owner of the supermarket chasing the guy. They broadcast it's me and I tell the owner to flag them down and show them where I am. It took about 2 minutes but the guys came. There is no better feeling in the world than hearing those sirens come for you. I work with this shift a lot and figured they'd recognize me but I had my badge out for them anyway.

The suspect had two outstanding warrants and several previous shoplifting charges so he got a trip to the pokey. The 15 packages of steak averaged about $8 each.

I went back and finished my time with the family at the park.

My wife's been calling all her friends bragging all evening. :D

All I have to say is:

The funny thing is it was a nice neighborhood. The suspect had a long walk.

Tricky thing, getting involved in things off duty.

After nearly having the tables turned on me once, I decided the next time, it would be something very serious for me to jump into off duty.

So you had the gun in one hand, the cell phone in the other...how did you hold your beer???

And did you spill any during the chase...that is the important question...

    Job well done...
Eunice: A .22? Oh you've gotta be kidding me. That's like bringing a knife to a gunfight.
Detective Greenly: Yeah, or bringing a really small gun... to a gunfight.
