Riot police have moved in after trouble broke out in a Paris protest against controversial plans for new youth employment contracts.

Police arrested at least 105 people at the Place de la Republique, the end point of a march in the north-east of the capital.

They intervened after a gang of youths stole mobile telephones and cameras from people taking part in the protest.

Police used tear gas and eventually brought in water cannons in order to try and disperse the crowds.

Officials said that the troublemakers had not been involved in the march itself and were using the protests in order to draw attention to their own problems.

There were large-scale riots in deprived areas of France last year.

According to police, more than a million people took part in demonstrations across the country, with 92,000 marching in Paris.

The demonstrations came as a general strike caused travel chaos across the country.

Unions, who said the turnout of demonstrators was far higher, called the strike in protest against the proposed First Employment Contract (CPE).

The one-day stoppage hit most public sectors as postal workers and train drivers joined students and teachers.

The strike saw the Eiffel Tower closed to visitors and delays on trains and Paris underground rail services.

Flights to French airports were also disrupted after air traffic controllers joined the stoppage.

The CPE allows employers to end job contracts for under-26s at any time during a two-year trial period without having to offer an explanation or give prior warning.

The government says it will encourage employers to hire young people but students fear it will erode job stability

I haven't seen this one yet but I did see the cable reports on the last burst of demos and it was interesting to see that in addition to the CRS they had the Gendarmerie Nationale out as well. Is this usual? Or is it indicative of the fact that the Police Nationale and CRS might be feeling a bit stretched?
