IT Position with LE

Hey all
My fulltime job is a Computer Engineer with a major airline in the NY City area. I have been in the computer field for close to 9 years now and have plenty of experience with repair, troubleshooting issues, networks, exchange, servers, etc...

My dream career would be one working with LE (Fed or Local) investigating computer crimes and such.

1. Does anyone know of any positions open in the NY area? I am even willing to work part time or volunteer my time to learn the job while at the same time proving myself as a valuable asset.

2. What type of background in IT would someone seeking a position like this need to get in. I am sure each dept. has different requirements, just looking for a ballpark answer.

I've been searching on my own for answers via web searches, but I figured I would ask here as well since many of you are actually in the business.

If anyone has any friends at the job who perform these functions and wouldn't mind asking them quickly what type of expereince or certifications one would need, that would be great.

I work at JFK. I feel like I live here since I have very long daily hours, but I get 3 days off every week so it's not so bad.

US Air huh? You definitly don't want to know who I work for then!

Sounds like FBI is the place for you. From what I have heard they love computer specialists as agents.

As stated on here before, most (if not all) LE Agencies want someone to put time in as a street officer/agent before they are sent into a slot like that.

One needs to get basic police work down before you can move into other things.....

Can't complain about my current job at all. Fairly easy, great people to work with, everyday at the airport is different, many people to meet (especially the laides) and i'm pretty much my own person here. I leave my office and walk around the terminal when it gets slow in here...

Anyways, I just want to fulfill my dream job of becoming a Computer Forensic specialist with LE. I will continue looking around.

I'll also ask around at the precinct next time I go in for patrol, but I am sure that the NYPD computer crimes unit is located at 1pp. (And I am sure i'd need a big hook or crane anyways)

From talking to the NYPD guys, your going to do your time on patrol and have a good hook if you want to do that for them......but I watched 60 Minutes tonight and it seems like they are expanding stuff like that.....but more on the Terrorism and Intel side of the house.....not so much into the other computer stuff...

No offense, but I can't stand discount carriers. Everybody get's paid less, and lower benefits.

And it's a threat to my job.

Not really true.

The pay I am getting now is more than I was getting at my last job. It's pretty good actually. i've been in the computer field for 9 years now and they are paying me a little above what the standard is for somone in my position. I've compared it to other friends salary that do the same work I do and they are all getting paid less. one is getting paid plenty less. Without getting into specifics, I make more than $50k/yr and less than $60k/yr.

As for the hourly employees, Tkt counter, ground ops, etc. Their starting salary is $10.50/hr with plenty of overtime. That is above most airlines where they start (on average) at $8/hr or so. The idea that jetblue gets paid less is a bad rumor.

We also get full benefits med/dental/vision/profit saring/stock purchase plan/free flights for me, wife, kids, and parents. Don't even pay taxes for flights within the US.

It's really not that bad.

It really sucks that other airlines are doing pretty bad, we didnt even make a profit this year for the first time. But the higher ups and CEO talk to us face to face (just had a meeting with him today actually) and the plans that he has for the future are relly promising. CEO meets face to face with all employees on a bi weekly basis in small groups to keep us ontop of everything. Pretty nice deal since you never get that anywhere else.

Also, it is true that we don't have a union. But nobody seems to mind since we are taking care of very well and its a great environment to work. Not having a union saves the company money I am sure. They dont take advantage of either (unlike the other rumors ive heard). It takes alot to lose your job here, actually I have yet to see anyone get let go. I come from the corporate world, so I am used to this.

I'm really not trying to start anything (honest). It just gets at me when I hear the negative rumors about us get passed around as being true. If you have any other questions let me know, or PM me.

CBP has a bunch of IT positions open right now on USA jobs. They are mostly 13-14 grades. I am not sure if they are open to the public, but it is worth a look.
