Passing an Emergency Vehicle while emergency flashing lights are activated.

Wondering if anyone has a law or laws similair to ours in Saskatchewan.

This great law states that a motorist passing an emergecy vehicle, while it's emergency lights are in operation, MUST slow to a speed of 60 kilometers per hour.

Although many times this law is difficult to enforce, it is a great law. I see time and time again where police officers or other emergency persons are stopped roadside and they are hit by a passing motorist.

We out there trying to save lives, it's nice to see that in our province there is some law to protect us.

Kind of hard to enforce if you are out by your self and can't run off. There are some states that now require motorists on multi-lane highways to move over to the other lane when passing an emergency vehicle lit up along a road. I think North Carolina is one of them.

Besides that, whenever I make a traffic stop on the interstate , I approach and conduct business on the passenger side. That, coupled with good vehicle positioning means they will hit my cruiser but not me ( hopefully) .

we will have the "move over" act by september. it will be fairly easy to enforce. pull over a car solely for the purpose of giving a warning. while waiting on returns, etc., watch traffic. first one that fails to comply = toast.

Our ambulance reports some vehicles to us that are acting unsafe or impeeding their progress, but only ones that are very problematic. They get plate numbers, and sometimes they file a report. I don't get involved in that too much, since it doesn't happen to often.

I was always under the impression that you should pull over when an ambulance has its lights on and let them go by. They should be going faster than the speed limit anyway if they are going to have their lights on.

Arkansas has a law that requires motorist to change lanes when coming up to a traffic stop. This law will start later this year.

I've never heard of a 'move over law'. Would visitors to your state get the ticket also?

Having said that, I never pass a cop on a traffic stop in the first lane - I always move over. More common sense than legal requirement.

I tend to slow way down and move to the left of my lane, but I am watching for the officer's safety. Habit.

OMG I am trippin'... don't ask what the hell I was looking at when I answered.. LOL.. at least I was in the ballpark. LOL

-- Anyone/Nobody out of the car and the road is not busy: I'll move to the opposite lane.
-- Anyone/Nobody out of the car and road is busy: I'll move over to the left part of my lane and slow down slightly - not much because otherwise that creates bottleneck.
I usually don't worry about this since I am usually in the passing lane passing people anyway. :D

Re: Passing an Emergency Vehicle while emergency flashing lights are activated.

Michigan has that law. Motorists are to move over into the other lane (if possible) and if there's oncoming traffic they are to slow down and proceed with caution. Smart law.

Too many valuable lives have been lost due to driver carelessness.

We (the motorists) have to be more cautious seeing as how an officer doesn't dare take his eyes off the people he's talking too. That can prove to be just as deadly.

I like to turn the rear RADAR antenna on in the car to slow down drivers with RADAR detectors, which then slows the vehicles without them. It's a great trick/tool.

unfortunately most people don't follow these laws, we have lost 3 firefighters in the past couple years due to the *^%%^#* that have been careless and have hit firefighters on trafic duty on scene. i am finding more and more people don't pay attention or are on their &*)$% cell phone not paying attention. been hit a couple times, surprised i am on duty still. i remind people when i go out to do fire prevention to know that every car that don't pull over or slow down when passing a person can die when they impede us from doing our job. the below can be siad about LEOs too.

    Firemen Don't Have A Chance!

When the fire trucks are delayed 40 seconds in traffic, People say:
"It took them 20 minutes to get here."

When the truck races at 40 m.p.h., it's:
    "Look at those reckless fools."

When four men struggle with an eight-man ladder:
"They don't even know how to raise a ladder."

When firemen open windows for ventilation to reduce heat in fighting a fire:
    "Look at the wrecking crew."

When they open the floor to get at a blaze:
    "There goes the axe squad."

If the chief stands back where he can see and direct his men, people say:
"He's afraid to go where he sends his men."

    If they lose a building:
    "It's a lousy department."

If they make a good "stop" folks say:
"The fire didn't amount to much."

If lots of water is necessary:
"They are doing more damage with water than the flames."

    If a fireman gets hurt:
    "He was a careless guy."

    It a citizen gets hurt:
    "It's a crazy department."

    If a fireman inspects a citizen's property:
    "He's meddling in somebody's business."

If he wants a fire hazard correct:
    "I'll see the mayor."

If he gets killed and leaves a family destitute:
"That's the chance he took when he joined the fire department."

I do believe that you are responsible to know the laws in each state that you travel in. Ignorance to the law is not an excuse whether you reside there or not.
