Question about Bureau of Prisons

If you want to get an administrative job with BOP, do you have to start out as a correctional officer or is that waived with a college degree? Just curious.

A professor I had at GMU was "Senior Deputy Assistant Director " (I dont know what that means, if he worked in a federal facility or if he was an administrator in DC). Did he most likely start off as a CO?
