My dad said that was the worst part of the job, being a cop in Scotland back in the 70's. He would get a call about an elderly relative who hadn't been seen in a few days, and they'd break in and find a "Sudden Pudden" (Sudden death). Usually some little old widow/er that nobody visits any more, bean dead for 2 weeks. :(

I was very young at the time he was a cop so he wouldn't tell me the stories, but when I started driving he would tell me about car crashes he had attended (back in the days when there were no drink-driving laws, cars were not built for safety and seatbelts were not required - Absolute carnage) to try to scare me into driving safely.

    (Yes, TX, I know... it didn't work... ;) )

My brother is on the force but he's still a rookie in Manchester, England, no good war stories yet, 'spet when he pulled up on a noise/rowdy kids complaint, and the officer in the car in front of him knocked on the complainant's door, only to be greeted when the door opened by a pistol held to his head... (Now that's what I call a sticky situation...)

(For war stories I ask my other brother who just came back from iraq... About the sniper in a building who shot at an advancing Desert Rats unit in Basra, only to have the whole unit 'light him up'. When they found the body and tried to count the bullet holes they stopped counting after 100... "Sufficed to say he is no longer a threat, sir"

As well as everything that has been covered I would suggest a multitool, ie Gerber or Leatherman type thing, all the necessary forms, documents and leaflets that you will need to deal with the most common calls, the rest depends on what you are supplied with as standard, what comes with the car and what you have to sort out yourself. I always have Police tape and a measuring tape with me, as well as evidence bags, first aid stuff, a number of torches, errr sorry flashlights, including filters. Binos can be useful, and above all dont forget that you may be stuck away from all normal amenities for some time, so think about your comfort, a small radio(civvy, not police, our cars have the standard radios removed),plenty of cigs if you smoke( even if you dont people you deal with will and it is amazing how much benefit you can get from the small cost of a cigarette) and on night duty a flask of tea or coffee.
Bullet-Cybernautics, let the law handle this.

VICKS VAPOR RUB. that stuff is awesome when you find a stinker.

i keep a copy of the class C statutes so i can quickly look up the correct arrest title for citations.

digital camera. you never know when you'll find yourself going "man i wish i had a camera."

    some waterless hand wash.

i carry kevlar lined gloves in my pocket. i don't search anyone without them.

When I did animal control and animal care we had to euthanize animals and proceed to put them in the freezer.
The freezer vents blew out to the break/smoking area.Talk about disgusting!
Or you get that flat cat thats been baking in the sun for a few hours...ick.
And 'lest I forget about the bloated exploding opossoums....those were nasty!
