    At Will Employment

How many of you work for a department that has "at will employment"? By at will I mean you work at the "will and pleasure" of the sheriff or chief. I know in VA all sheriffs deputies are considered at will.
Only four more days before I finally take the oath of office again and strap on that badge. Has anyone else ever taken a job other than a LEO and came back. Biggest mistake of my life....lol

With the ACSD, your first 24 months probabtionary period (which is twice as long as most departments for some reason) is at will. (you can get fired for nearly anything). After that, you have civil service protection (doesn't mean you can't get fired, it just means the department has to have a solid case against you)

Not sure if there is a real question there, but Missouri is an "At will" state. However, most cities have policies and procedures that provide certain "civil service type" protection to their employees and the courts have held these supercede the state law. This means due process and reason are necessary to terminate someone.

However, all sheriff's deputies serve "at the pleasure of the sheriff". NO protection at all.

That blows Hanson. In CA, once you complete your probationary period (between 12-24 months), then you are afforded civil service protection in all departments statewide. The reasons for this is to avoid the old days when large parts of departments were hired on the buddy system (you were friends with Ed Daley and you got a job with the PD - something that I feel is very undesirable as I want the best qualified person to get the job and not just a buddy of the Mayor or Sheriff).

Oregon is not an at will state. However, our probationary period is 18 months, 50% longer than surrounding jurisdictions. As a recruit, you have no union protection and it is made very clear that the Bureau can let you go for no reason at all. However, they are concerned about being sued (I guess), so they do all the do***entation hoop-jumping and make a solid case before they do.

I think it's a good process. It allows the bad recruits to go and doesn't let someone in the chain of command who just has it out for you (personality conflict?) just get rid of you.

Who is Will? Why is everything done At Will?

I see movies where people shoot their guns, cannons, missiles, phasers, photon torpedoes, etc., At Will.

They always say "fire at Will". Who is Will and what has he done?
