What gangs do you mostly encounter on patrol?
I'm not a LEO yet, but i will be soon.
My area seems to have a lot of problems with the
Nortenos and Surenos.
I know they're Mexican gangs, but when did they originate?

MS 13 which I have heard originated in California is blowing up in Northern Virginia. They started in Arlington and now have spread west through both Fairfax and now into Loudoun County (where I live). I have not heard much of them doing terrible stuff in my area yet but them tagging parts of the town I live in p1sses me off. I hate graffiti and tagging. It makes places look like crap and if you are familiar with the "Broken Windows" theory by Wilson and Kelling, physical disorder will lead to social disorder and eventulally a downward spiral of doom. Soon people who once carred about their town will move out to a safer, cleaner area. If everyone who is care moves out, then the area will turn into a virtual ghetto.

Lou: Hey Chief, can I hold my gun sideways? It looks so cool.
Chief Wiggum: Haha sure. Whatever you want, birthday boy.
They are both gangs that originated in California Prisons. I believe that the Mexican Mafia originated in the 60s. The Surenos (Nuestra Familia) originated as a result of the Mexican Mafia. Rural Northern California immigrants banded together to stop the harassment by Mexican Mafia members.
sorry I meant the nortenos are (nuestra familia, X14), the surenos are (mexican mafia, X13).
Here we have the Inbreds and the CoonSkinners. Much like the Cryps and the Bloods, but they duke it out in the "Letters to the Editor" section in the local newspaper and the local Waffle House parking lot.
Here in NY we have a really rich selection of gangs.
All the way from the traditional Italian Mafia, to Chinese Triads, all sorts of assorted "ghetto gangs", Hell's Angles and more Latin gangs than you can shake a stick at.
But the one that's the MOST dangerous, in the sense that they are organized and disciplined in a way that other gangs aren't, is the Russian Mafia.
Put it to you this way:
The old guineas in the Mafia, when they relax they play Bocci Ball.
These Russians? They play chess.
You're talking about an entire different league. Plus the Russian mob is filled with ex-KGB types.
Their is a lot of russiuans in Westfield, but I haven't heard about them being in any gangs or anything, when I took the tour at the Ludlow jail, I saw what the gaurd said was the leader of the Kings

If guns cause crime, then pencils cause misspelled words, matches cause fires and spoons make Rosie O'donnell fat.

Ummm... I'm in NY, and I play bocci ball, and I'm Italian. Nothing like perpetuating the stereotype. :DOriginally posted by EricTheBald

I'm in Rockland County. Where are you?

*For todays pointless trivia, we have the word "WOP" whose origin is allegedly Ellis Island NY. Supposedly, during the wave of Italian Immigration in the early part of the last century, immigrants (all immigrants, not just Italians.) who showed up without official travel do***ents of any type had their immigration files stamped W.O.P. which means literally; Without Papers.
Actually, I am part Native American too... does that make me a Wopaho? :D (j/k)
I refer to myself and other Italians as Guidos mostly...
I am about 300 miles away from you, Eric... I'm upstate (or as TCSD yells at me to say "I'm in Western NY")
heh heh heh... Wopaho....
good one.:D
In the Chicago area, we have: surenos 13s, nortenos 14s, latin kings, latin counts, sin city boys, and the 18s. There are smaller gangs, but these are the main gangs.
Not a LEO myself. But here we have mostly rival Asian gangs battling it out lately. A lot of shooting for this area I guess you can say. The Hell's Angels are here, but all they do is bomb other strip joints that are opening up.

I'm digging my way to something better
zebra, are you talking about in the city or the suburbs?
