Dilemma..need advice (sorry it's pretty long)

Well I kinda figured this would happen, I'm playing tug-of-war with what to do. I started this job back in September as an Independant Contractor (IT/Network Administrator...basically I run the server here at work and troubleshoot it, etc) When I started, I had agreed to work for this guy and charge him 1/2 the rate that I charge regular customers, only if I am guaranteed atleast 35 hours a week.

Well in the beginning, my boss was very cool and he and I got along great. I soon noticed he was a sick pervert and fired people on a whim. I brushed it off and tried not to let it get to me. Well I made a mistake and used him as a reference for the Academy because before I realized how twisted he was, I actually thought he would be a good person to have as a reference.

Well now that the academy starts Saturday (I've already passed the PT and background checks) he gets his tighties in a wad whenever I mention how excited I am about it(mind you, I wont be missing any work, the academy is on the Weekends and at night).

So he comes up to me yesterday and plops this academy reference packet down on my desk. He says "Oh I was sent this a while ago and forgot to fill it out...but I'm going to eventually" I responded nonchalantly and thanked him for offering to do so.

Well he starts rambling off how he finally gets someone in here that he likes and they are going to eventually leave him (and he mentions how he hates Cops). I replied to him saying that it is extremely hard to get hired as a LEO and that i wouldn't be leaving for a long long time if I was to be hired. Well, he starts getting ****ty and said "Well if I fill this packet out with a bunch of detrimental stuff, maybe they will kick you out" and he walks away

WTF??? I was shocked, I almost walked out. I was flaming and told my husband about this. Naturally I want to tell my boss to get bent, but my husband said that anything this guy says isn't going to matter because for one I have already been accepted into the Academy, and I have about 10 LEO's in town backing me up with a good reference. My husband says just milk this job till I get hired after the academy.

How would you all handle this situation?

I'd call your recruiter/BI and tell them the situation, ask if you should get another packet and find another reference or if it will even be a big deal if the guy does do something so messed up. Sorry about the situation, that's a tough spot to be put in.

Agree ... the sooner you let your recuriter/BI know about the situtation, even if your BOSS says things determinal to your application .. you already notified the department ... Tough Spot for you ... Good Luck, let us know how things turn out

Did your boss know about the academy before he hired you?

Thanks for the replies. I will schedule a meeting with my Commander and explain and hopefully it won't hurt my chances.

Jynkxxie- When I initailly met with him, I did tell him about my plans for school and the academy, I do remember him asking if it would interfere with work and I had explained to him that the Academy was designed for the working class and that it wouldn't affect my attendance. He pretty much left it at that. I think he thought I was dreaming/feeding him a line of BS because he has openly said to some of the guys here that women don't make it as LEO's

I'm just wondering what kind of obligation he thinks I owe to him, according to him, I'm being paid under the table and Im not even considered an Employee in his eyes; however, I did print out my earnings and file my taxes just last week. I don't need to be playing with fire (IRS)

I watched where he filed the packet away and I'm so tempted to snag it but I won't because I will just be shooting myself in the foot.

I guess I'll just play it by ear and see what happens :D

Wouldn't it be funny if he didn't file on the money he paid you? When you filed yours, you let the IRS know you got income from him and they'll be cross checking numbers.......... :D

I had a similar situation come up when I went through the academy.
Several years ago I was a tech support supervisor for an ISP in California. I left that job and moved back here and when I went for my interview at the academy they asked about that job and said that the Owner had said some really crappy things about me. I explained to them that he was a crazy Iranian who would blow up at the drop of a hat and didn't like people in general. When they compared what he said to my other references they took it with a grain of salt.

I think in the end, this fool isn't going to affect your process. Good luck!

Talk to your BI. After being let go yesterday, I got on the phone with my BI and explained the situation to her. She said she understood that these things happen sometimes. She also said that she would try her best to expedite my processing. Don't worry about him because you have other references that will put in a good word for you.
