    Police Work As Magicians

Over 200 police in Essex have second jobs - with some working as magicians it has been revealed.

Other jobs include musicians, therapists, entertainers and florists.

Essex Police admit more than 200 of their 3,300 officers need extra money so they can afford their own home.

All the jobs have to be approved by Chief Constable Roger Baker reports The Sun.

Force records show the most common second job for officers is driving.

PC Sue Kelly, of the Essex Police Federation, said: "I can see an increase in the number of second jobs as a very significant possibility.

"Since the Human Rights Act has come into force, there has been a slight loosening of restrictions but all police officers have to get permission from the chief constable.

"There are various occupations or second incomes out there. I know magicians, a florist and coach drivers.

"They often take these jobs to make ends meet or to go on holiday or buy things like a house - especially where prices are so high."

Interesting comment from the Fed rep. It doesn't say if she then went on to say that since police officers have to take second jobs to have a decent living it follows that their pay must be too low.

I remember reading that the cost of housing in the SE of England is amongst the highest in Europe and even the world which is probably an economic bubble about to burst anyway, but for the momen it must be giving the average copper in that area some major grief.

Heck it must be bad. Even the Chief Constable, Roger, is a baker.....(alright I know, groan away :D)

The cost of living against the wage for officers in the south east is so extreme, most new officers now cannot afford to buy their own homes and can only rent in areas where you wouldn't want to live in the first place.

    No housing allowance?

That's a pretty crook state of affairs though. No-one expects to live like a wealthy person if they're going to be a copper but they don't expect to live among the worst of their "clients" either.
