    Question

    Whats up

When i turn 18 i want to write a book on "Jail Life" teaching older teens/early 20's that jail is no fun. But i was wondering in order to get a first hand look at jail life if it would be reasonable to go to my local jail and ask the head of it if they will put me in a cell for 2 days and treat me like i actually did something wrong. (handcuffs, mugshots, fingerprints) Do you think this is a reasonable request? and will they go for it.
    Thanks for your time!!

    -Kyle

I think the quick answer is no. Too many liabilities... Plus all those bill of right issues and lawsuits that get filed each year. I think in addition to the department's no, you would get a no from their insurance providers as well:(

You'd be better off researching and conducting interviews. You may be able to get permission to speak with corrections officers and inmates themselves as well as perhaps get a tour of certain facilities.

Yeah, this looks to be the only real option.

MSNBC has a show on the weekends on different prisons they are great documentaries. Try searching for their video clips or ordering info for their DVD's.

Yes, that is a legitimate journalist, not an 18 year old kid with hopes of writing a book. HUGE difference.

Kyle, not to rain on your parade, because it seems to be a good idea, but you need to reach out to the younger set, if people in their late teens or early twenties have not figured out that jail is not the place to be EVER, then they won't ever learn.

I'm Hub McCann. I've fought in two World Wars and countless smaller ones on three continents. I led thousands of men into battle with everything from horses and swords to artillery and tanks. I've seen the headwaters of the Nile, and tribes of natives no white man had ever seen before. I've won and lost a dozen fortunes, killed many men and loved only one woman with a passion a flea like you could never begin to understand. That's who I am. Now, go home, boy!

To be completely honest with you, I don't see you being too successful because you haven't actually served time. You really can't write a book about how horrible jail life is and expect someone to actually take it seriously and try to learn something from it if you haven't experienced it yourself. You would be able to give much more insightful and accurate advice if you had been in prison. Another angle is to get into a career in corrections or probations where you get real life experience with people in prison. After you work for a few years in that environment, then you will have sufficient knowledge of what you are writing about. If you wrote it when you turned 18 not many people would read a book about prison life by an 18 year old who has never spent a day in prison.

Also, no, your local police would not do this for you.
