    scanner

i have a really really really old police scanner from my dad.. probably like 1950s? well i dont really see how you would program it for your area.. it only has a switch with the numbers 1-8..but none of them do anything. how would you program it?

if its too old and wont work, where do you usually buy them then learn to program them? thanks

I don't either. And since you don't live in my area I'm especially disinterested.

    OK, what the hell....i'll bite.

Your scanner is too old to be programmable.

It needs "chrystals" for the frequency you wish to scan.

    Now you may go.

A scanner that old will not work. You can go to any Radio Shack and buy a scanner and a scanner book to help you out.

I don't consider the topic of 1950's radio scanners to be particularly simple, can I have a question on sport?

There were no scanners back in the 50's. Until the early 70's there were simple tuners and some people were able to tune their standard fm radios to the low band to hear their local PD. Scanners as you describe require crystals, whiich plug into each channel, and as such are not programmable. Having spent a considerable amoount of time during my teens with both a tuner as well as a crystal controlled scanner, I don't know if radio crystals are available any longer. Regardless, the frequency of your local agencoes have probably changed and you probably cannot receive those frequencies on that scanner any longer, since it is either low or hi VHF or UHF. Many agencies have now moved to the 800 meg area or higher, well beyond the range of any 70's style crystal scanner.

Short answer: It ain't gonna work.

For further information, I suggest you take your question to some communications techie site or possibly www.scannerworld.com . Cops don't generally know a great deal about scanners, since the forum is designed around Law Enforcement info.

I don't know that they actually had scanners back in the 50's did they? I think they only had radios. I have a similar type scanner with orange buttons for each channel and you just put in whatever frequency crystal you want for each channel. The scanner is from the early Eighties...

Ohhh, I'm a retard... I didn't read Creeker's post... but at least I was right :D We owned a Radio Shack in the Eighties so I had all the cool top notch technology :p

Through High School in the late 70's I had a Realistic brand Multiband Radio on which I had my local Hiway Patrol dialed in at 33.10 Mhz. sitting on my desk beside my Johnson 250 CB radio set on channel 9.

It wasn't until I think 1980 when Bearcat came out with a programmable line, and I bought my BC 250, a 50 channel "powerhouse" that also scanned the Airplane freq's. On patrol in 1984, I bought a handheld crystal type that I wedged into my passenger door so I could hear what my ladjoining S.O. was doing while I worked. They didn't allow us to have the S.O.'s channel in our cars, and there was no scanning police radios back then.

A few years later I got a programmable handheld, then a vehicle mounted programmable. Still have my latest handheld programmable 800 mhz here in my office, and all of the others in my garage... about 6 or so in all.

    Ahh, memories...
