Do you think it's mean for a cop to.....

    Just wondering....
Do you think it's mean for a cop to pull out the radar and shoot it at someones radar detector just to mess with them?

I had a guy that I had paced so I already knew his speed. I was one car behind to his right and noticed he had an activated radar detector on his windshield. I considered pulling out the radar and shooting the detector with it while we were sitting at the stop light but I thought it might be unprofessional.

Made me chuckle though just for coming up with the idea. Detectors are so damned annoying in a car that I'm still not sure why anyone would want one.

I do that all the time. When sitting at a red light and notice that the car in front of me has a radar detector. On, off, on , off....just to watch the little lights jump up and down. If it is a really long red light, I see if I can get the guy to turn it off b/c it is irritating him so much.:D

One of my favorite past times although I don't get the chance to do it nearly enough. Its especially fun like you said, when you're pacing the car. Shoot the radar, he slows down and you can see his head turning trying to look for the cop. Then shut it off and he speeds back up, until you do it again a mile down the road.

In VA you then get to write them for an illegal RADAR detector too :D

Oh not true (according to those that buy them) They have that "Highway Alert" feature that tells them about road construction and such - THAT is why they bought them ...... Not not break the law.

I do not know why their use isn't illegal in all 50 States.

I can only imagine the joy I would get from that.

When I was a teenager, I would hear stories about kids going into Canada via Detroit and having their radar detector taken away, nailed into a 2x4, then returned to them...any Canadian officers have any knowledge of truth to that?

I'll answer your question with a question:
Do you think it's mean to pull nose-to-nose with a car in a parking lot (say, Wal-Mart) and notice that the car in front of you has a radar detector and it's turned on, so you turn your radar on and get out and go inside?
    Burn baby, burn.

I think it is super professional, not to mention sweet, that you even care that it could be mean or unprofessional so I am sending you a little green present.

I would think that a little harmless fun in your line of work would be OK.

I kind of think people who have radar detectors have a bit of an unethical streak, anyway, so I am biased. I mean, the goal is safer highways for all right? ;)

The more people who are educated in the futility of radar detectors the better.

If Big recalls correctly, it is illegal in all 50 states for semi's to have radar detectors. When Big worked the roads as a BPA, Big would harass the truckers he found in possession of the nefarious devices. Big: "Why do you have a radar detector? You do know it's illegal for a semi to have a radar detector don't you?" Driver: "Uh......" *blank stare*
