joking aside though, do they really spray you in the face with that stuff when you are in the academy?

I got to see a video of the class graduating before mine getting OC'ed. It didn't look all that bad, but still doesn't look like a good time.

But to answer your question, yes you get sprayed in the academy. At least every academy I have heard of sprays you as part of certification to carry OC.

We are getting sprayed sometime in March, I believe, and I am not looking forward to it. Nothing worse than being the biggest guy in class and end up being the one screaming and crying on the ground like a 5 year old little boy kicked in the balls. I hope it doesn't come to that. Also, between now and then I need to get some glasses, because I really don't want, or need, my contacts fusing to my eye balls.

Knowing my instructors (ususally off duty officers), he'll gather the rest of the staff and any officers in the area and tell me I have to go through it again just so they can laugh at me...then tell me to look for another line of work lol.

I have never been sprayed or tasered, but I think I would prefer to be tasered (not that I'll be given a choice). I'm sure tasing is painful too, but I really dislike my eyes being messed with, so I'm thinking taser.
