As one of the members suggested, get some range time in before purchasing a weapon ie., pistol or revolver. Start off renting a .22 Ruger. It's nice shooting. Then advance to a 9mm once your comfort level has risen.
I shoot a Taurus 9mm on a weekly basis. I was never interested in shooting a higher caliber until recently. A few of my buddies owning Kimber 1911 .45's, have encouraged me to shoot them. Quite honestly, I was a little intimidated by the higher caliber guns, but they aren't as bad as once thought.
My last word of advice to you is don't ever point a gun/weapon at anyone unless you are prepared to use it. If you have any doubt in your mind that you couldn't shoot your attacker, do not pull it out. Chances are you'd have the weapon turned on you.
Good luck!

I love the man that can smile in trouble; that can gather strength from distress and grow brave by reflection. 'Tis the business of little minds to shrink; but he whose heart is firm, and whose conscience approves his conduct, will pursue his principles unto death."
