    chris2001 was right

Just talked with a Sheriff's deputy and he told me they are now having problems with drug dealers using scanners to avoid LE. This is happening in a very ghetto-y area.

I'm surprised these drug dealers even know how to program a scanner for our 800 MHz trunked systems. On second thought, maybe they don't. They probably stole the scanners (already programmed) from other people  .

If we end up encrypted digital because of stuff like this I won't be surprised, and I won't blame them a bit.

Most of the search warrants we serve are on houses in which we find scanners.

That is unfortunate :( . As much as I like to listen as a law-abiding hobbyist, if more departments go encrypted I will understand completely. Officer safety is MUCH more important than a hobby. I can always listen to CB radio, FRS walkie-talkies, airband, etc.

Hearing about how a truckers (methane!) gas is filling up the cab of his truck just isn't quite as exciting though!! :p

LOL! You haven't heard the CB in my area. It is HILARIOUS at times, and much better than TV :D .

Besides, during the day city code enforcement will operate on PD's dispatch channels and run plates. I just turn the scanner down at that point.

Well yeah, we don't just have a dartboard of random answers, where we throw the dart, and where ever it lands, is how we answer the question. :D

I've used encrypted radios and their range was remarkably limited. Unless the technology has changed, they wouldn't be fesible for ordinary police work.

You just have to assume that every meatball out there has a scanner and if you're smart, a receiver that can pick up cell phones too.

Several of the ppl I worked with, self included, used to listen to scanners at work.
I had bought a 800mhz years ago, and it picked up cell phones.
The one I was listening to, a guy brought in was one of those handheld types and was constantly loosing signal in the shop so I went and bought, what was expensive at that time, the lastest and the greatest.
I know that I would never say anything on a cell phone that I wouldn't want the world to hear, I heard more then I wished to on the scanner.......Lmao.

I remember one night some drunk guy was trying to talk this girl into picking him up and having a little tryst before she went home to her hubby....... :D

My old agency went to a digital trunked system with encryption capabilities. The technology has come a long way since your days in Bedrock. :D :p

Dang you mean I actually got something right who woulda thunk it :D.

Yes Sgt. the systems have come a very long way. You can travel a long distance now on the new 800mhz and still be heard and here whats going on, even with the ecrypted signal. The State Troopers in my area only use the 800mhz, that way they can private chat each other on the radio, as well as talk to other agencies its pretty cool, got to see one a few days ago. The personal radios that the officers are carrying are even small.

I remember years ago hearing cells on 800 MHz, and being frustrated with my analog cellphone due to the lack of privacy. I went digital a few years ago and I couldn't be happier. 800 MHz CDMA digital cellular sure beats AMPS analog cell service, which is rapidly becoming obsolete.

Me too, back when I had analog service, and ditto on hearing some weird stuff (years ago before the current cell monitoring laws ;) ).

Don't tell Sarge I let this slip, but he told me in a pm that when he first started, everything was in black and white, color had not even been invented yet!
