Taking it out of the media...and making it real.
His name was Kevin James, he was 34 years old, he was a highly decorated officer for his 6 years of service, and he was someone I had conversed with on several occasions.
The building I work in (Dallas InfoMart) is fairly large and sits off of a major highway and an extremely busy road (I-35&Oak Lawn). As a result, we have several police officers that direct traffic daily to help the tenants cross the street to off-campus parking lots.
Mr. James was one of the officers that helped me cross the street for 8 months. I talked to him about once a week or so, but he was one of those staples you get used to seeing. When I saw him, that meant the after work part of my day was beginning.
The interesting thing, is that I didn't think much of it when I first heard the news that an officer had been killed. The usual feel of sadness for the family and anger at the POS that did it, but it didn't register until this morning when I learjed it was someone I actually knew and interacted with on an almost daily basis.
I learned today that a guy I really liked died doing his job. He had a young wife, something I can relate too, and he was just trying to help the POS that shot him. Rumors say now that the perp knew he was a cop and was trying to earn a reputation by killing him. It makes me sick...and when it hits home...suddenly life seems a little more valuable to me.
I feel for his wife and family, and though I just knew him as the traffic cop guy, I'll honestly miss seeing him say hello on my daily walk to the car.
All of you LEO's stay safe! I appreciate you.
-SS :(
