The ex-convict who authorities say shot and wounded two cops during a wild Harlem shootout and then jumped from a high floor was on life support Thursday, and his family said they intended to pull the plug. After evading cops who were chasing him, Tyrell Harris, 21, jumped from a 14th-floor apartment at 1980 Park Ave. Wednesday. He was in critical condition, and his family said Thursday that doctors had declared him brain-dead.
Harris' aunt said they planned to pull him off his respirator at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, though police sources said legal paperwork had not been completed and would likely push the process to Friday. "He didn't intentionally mean to shoot a cop," said Harris' aunt, Tonya Harris, 41, who lives near the site of a candlelight vigil that had been set up for Harris. "My nephew was a good kid in spite of his record. Unfortunately, he felt he could handle matters in his own hands."
He was paroled in January after serving nearly three years on a weapons arrest.
Tyrell Harris walked around the neighborhood Wednesday firing two guns into the air, sending residents scattering for their lives. He was apparently trying to get revenge on a man who had grazed him in the head with a bullet on Sunday, an injury that required more than a dozen stitches, police said.
"My condolences go out to the families [of the cops]. They were just doing their jobs ... they have families," Tonya Harris said. "I'm really sorry for their pain and suffering." Sgt. Patrick O'Boyle, grazed in the head and shot in the pelvis and leg, was in stable condition Thursday at Harlem Hospital Center. Officer Erik Hansen was recovering at home with a graze wound to the ankle, police said.
