Police officer killed, 5 more wounded in shootout

ALEXANDRIA, Louisiana (AP) -- One police officer was killed and five others were wounded Thursday in a shootout that erupted as police tried to arrest a suspect in the ambush of another officer, authorities said.

Police exchanged gunfire with a man who was in a house.

Two of the wounded officers were reported in good and fair condition. The condition of the three other officers was not immediately disclosed.

Officers had been looking for the gunman who opened fire with an assault rifle on a police officer Wednesday. The officer was ambushed while responding to an apparently false report of a robbery. The gunman sprayed the officer's patrol car with bullets, firing about 20 shots.

The officer was not hit.

As of this time, one of the 5 wounded officers has also passed away, so 2 are KIA.

The news report I've read hasn't been too in depth, but I gotta wonder if these were all SWAT guys rushing the house, or if they were the cops that surrounded the house.

In our neighboring city of Alexandria, about 65
miles away, there was a shooting yesterday involving
the police.

Barricaded suspect who, the day before had shot up
a police car. The police found him, acted on it, and
it went to hell.

Two dead, 5 wounded, including one of the academy
staff, and one of the best friends Ive ever had. The
wounded should all be ok, as far as I have learned so
far.

As I head off for the services, I wish to pass this
on. You, all the people you know, your departments,
fellow traders -

The citizens in the neighborhood stood around
during the incident, jeering at the police,
threatening to get guns and help the shooters,
laughing and cursing. While officers were down, dead
or dying. Thier raises have been non existent, the
problems getting worse, and no end in sight.

E mail the academy staff, visit the web site, call,
write, fax - anything to let these officers know that
as bad as things are, thier brothers and sisters in
law enforcement are thinking of them. Ask them to post
the e mails where the line officers can see them,
especially.

Flood the damn place with support - the academy
instructors will see that it gets posted.

They deserve so much more than to be shot, killed
and laughed at. Give them a moment of your time, and
tell them that it's not all in vain. That sometimes,
when all the bull**** is laid aside, honor, duty,
service, and watching your buddy's six will carry the
day for us.
