    Went on a ride along

Last night (friday) I went on a ride along with the agency I'm in the hiring process. This is the second time I have went on a ride along with them. And it was a blast!! We had radar in our car so I got to see how that worked. We caught 3 speeders and the cop gave me the choice of giving them a citiation or letting them go. I let the first guy go but wrote the others up. And he actually let me "write"(fill out the citiation) on one. One guy we stopped was driving on a suspended lisence. I got to see an arrest warrant carried out and see the jail docket. I know this is all boring for the cops here but I was excited. LOL

The officer I rode with was real nice and helpful. Oh and I learned when you see 2 cop cars side by side talking, they are talking about where to eat LOL.

I got to meet the K9 German Shepherd Dog Nero. What a beautiful dog. The handler told me about him biting a perp in the crotch area. Yep...I said the crotch area LOL. It took 6 stitches to the penis and 4 puncture wounds to the scrotum and one punctured testicle. And get this...He was a registered sex offender! Talk about poetic justice. LOL

What go around comes around, I have always said. LOL

Sounds like you had a good time. I have wanted to go on one for a long time but not alot of agencies around here offer it. Too Much liability.

If there are any officers here from MI whose departments do have ride alongs I would be interested in signing up!

    Talia,
Aren't you in the academy or something? I was under the impression that you were....

Darin, I was like you on my first ridealong. Now, I just play with the radio, the sirens, and tell my cop where to drive :D .
I haven't been on one since my birthday in July - I think I may go on one soon for work (we are forced to do 'em), but I may take a night and go on my own time too. I love going! And the guys/girls I ride with are all pretty great people.

    Stump,

No I am afraid that I am like 35 credits shy and plenty of money dry. It is just too much on me to work as much as I do and take more classes. Maybe if I still lived with Ma and Dad, but I enjoy doing it all myself. I am in no hurry as I make great money where I am at. I would also like to get a few other things settled before I take off for the academy.

jonesy, i were you and applying to that agency i would talk to the chief and state your situation that you want to learn as much as you possibly could about the dept and the people that you will be working with, most time they will allow you to go out with them more than once a year.

Every morning in Africa a gazzel awakes and knows that it must run faster than the fastest lion or it will be eaten. The moral of the story is. No matter wheither you are the lion or the gazzel. That when the sun comes up your running..........

    Ride-a-Longs

Stump: Quick question ... Why in the hell are ride-a-longs in NY forced? ... I was under the impression that a good portion of the agencies don't force their officers to take riders ... You must have some really understanding officers their ... Most of the officers here don't even like to have reservists ride with them ...

allusivewolf:Jonesy sounds about right ... the best you can do is put in your application and hope some understanding officer will take ya on ... Sgt's are the ones who handle issues of ride-a-longs (for the most part) if there's any *sses to kiss it would be theirs ...

    Jonesy:

Like Allusivewolf said, ask your department head for "exception to the rule" regarding the number of ride-alongs you can take during the application process. The agency I'm being considered for waved that rule for me. It's in their best interest to get you familure with the department and their procedures.

    Good luck

Because my job is working with the police every day, our superiors make us ride with them on occasion. It is not at our request (except most of the time we can choose who we want to go with) - hence the "forced ridealong". This way, they feel that we can get a better feeling for each other's jobs, and it gives us a break from our normal duties. Typically, I am required to do about 3 or 4 a year, but if I want to do more, I can - just have to ask.
