i have nothing but respect for the "purple ties" lol, sorry i work for a sheriffs dept upstate. professional controversy lol.

but basically i was wondering is the accedemics and training basically the same kind of training or does it vary from local pd's and sheriffs. or if so what are the differences?

The NYSP academy is hands down the toughest in NYS. I haven't attended the troop academy, but in talking to them, working with them, and getting the literature from the academy, they don't mess around. Their training is styled more after military, and it is much tougher to complete. Since they have jurisdiction throughout the state, when you graduate, you can be placed anywhere in the entire state (usually the "undesirable" places) for a few years until you build your senority (and even then its an iffie thing to get out of there).
Long live the Grey Gods! Love dem ties!!! :D

    Check out their NYSP Website

    Stump,

I agree with you observation. Most State Police Academies are a lot tougher then the local academies or the Pay as you go style. Like Michigan the local academies are not that tough physically, and they dont have the high standard with the course work. Whereas the State Police Academy its tought to get into, and hard to pass through. Our State has one of the hardest SP academies in the country. Our troops are usually compared with the California Highway Patrol. We set the standard for vehicle testing which the Us goes by and among other things to. If our Troops dont test it California does. So in short you hit the nail on the head girl.

I don't like saying that one academy is tougher than the others. Nobody is able to say which is "one of the toughest" in the country unless they have actually attended each of them. And even then, it would be hard to say.

I have to agree with stump,

I think it all depends apon what the individual persons is looking for in his/her career. Wiether it be better pay or a wider area of work. But regardless everyone has the same criteria "to serve and protect"
Every morning in Africa a lion awakes and knows that it must run faster than the fastest gazzel or it will starve. Every morning in Africa a gazzel awakes and knows that it must run faster than the fastest lion or it will be eaten. The moral of the story is. No matter wheither you are the lion or the gazzel. That when the sun comes up your running..........

Well having been through three, I'll say it, "one academy is tougher than the other". Go check out the New Jersey State Police Academy then have a look at a local community college basic law enforcement course. My wife and I went to seperate academies in our state. I was up at 6am running for 10 MILES while she was eating popcorn and watching movies.
    Huge difference.
    Blessed are the Peacemakers...

Apples and Oranges, babe. In order to be fair, you need to compare Troop Vs. Troop academies...

I am a graduate of 3 basic police academies. The 1st was a community college setting, they tried to toughen it up but you can only go so far when the student is paying tution and there is no threat of termination. The 2nd was a sheriff's academy, good training. 3rd was local municipal PD academy by far the toughest and best training I had recieved. I beleived its based on the dept's goals and objectives. Our PD is located in a rough part of the area. We are not a large dept and for our size we have lost our share of officers, our fire arms training is outstanding. The largest PD ageny's academy in my area is more of a college type setting/ they wear uniforms march, some paramilitary training but too laid back in my opinion.
The state police academy is tough but not any tougher then most of the larger PD police academies. Yes they do run at 6am but that's because the cadets live in barracks.
My pt was in the hot TX afternoons.
