    Old school police

am i the only one who thinks this way?
i'd carry a revolver if they'd let me.
i could honestly care less about having computers in the car.
i love black and white squads with rotator lightbars.
i think a PR-24 is the best weapon ever invented.
i'm a fan of big metal flashlights.
i like the wire mesh cages. makes the car feel roomier.
i don't care for fiberglass rear seats.
you can have the push bumper and spotlight.
i'd just as soon hand write my reports in the car than type them in the office.
i long for the days of handwritten tickets.
digital radios? i liked having access to the weather channel on my handheld.
    slapper anyone?
radar? who needs one? i got a speedometer.

the more technology you get, the more you miss the times you just did without. what do you miss most, or least, now as opposed to when you started?

I can't argue with you too much but the computers are the BEST tool to come along in my 19+ yrs as a LEO. The number of suspended drivers, people with warrants, frauulent tags etc that I have found over the past several years by playing the license plate lotto has been significant.

I don't miss our old dodgy analogue radios that used to hiss and fart.

i love black and white squads with rotator lightbars. Blue and white, but got that too.

I'll tell you what, we'll swap. Then, come see me after 6 months and see if you want to swap back. :p

The main thing I want is the computers. (They're installed in the cars, but not online yet). It's extremely frustrating not being able to do checks when the air is busy. Got to wait 10 minutes sometimes.

For the most part I agree. I loved my 686 revolver with wood grips.
And four cell metal flashlights made great batons in a pinch. I liked my 26 inch straight baton much better than my asp.

One thing I do like about today is the laptop computers for reports.

don't you drive that holden commodore? i'll be there next week. :D

computers aren't bad, but we've been without them for 6 months waiting on software updates to integrate with our ticket books. i actually enjoy not having it. i can just as easily run stuff over the air. what i wouldn't mind having are the old clunker MDTs. those amber and green screens. those were just hardcore terminals that never went down.

This is an interesting post, because I thought that since the implementation of some of these things, more LEO lives have been saved.

accidents are skyrocketing. a rough average of 200 officers died per year prior to 1990. before that time, most officers were killed by gunfire, usually more than 100, while less than 50 died in vehicle related incidents. now, the rough average of officers killed per year is about 150, but half of those are due to vehicle related incidents.

i think it has more to do with tactics that are keeping at least 50 cops alive per year, but the accident rate is going way up causing officers to die needlessly. as much crap that's inside most cars now, it's not hard to figure out why.

What I miss the most is the "old school" refusal to bow down to the foo-foo-whiner-me-me generation.

The predominance of a large amount of departments to open up internal affairs/professional standards investigations on our officers can be argued as a way to establish credibility that perceived misconduct will be fully addressed.

This in and of itself, sounds reasonable at face value, however, when they start taking away the discretionary power of first line supervisors and actually assign an I.A. number because someone complained an officer "rolled their eyes at them" we are going to push good street cops out of the job and cause others to shy away from proactive enforcement.

The following is a true incident that occurred at my first department back in the late 70's when "cops were cops" and the Chief of Police (Bless his soul) knew a scum bag when they saw one.

Motor officer was directing traffic. Scumbag did not want to take the ordered detour and argued with the officer. When the scumbag realized the officer was not impressed with the scumbag's self importance, he finally started the detour, but decided to show his affection and respect by "flipping the bird" at the officer.

Motor officer has another officer cover for him as he mounts his iron horse and makes a traffic stop on the scumbag a couple of blocks away. He walks up to scumbag and asks him to "please do that again." Scumbag asks, "What the f*** is your problem?" Officer, "Please do that again, extend your middle finger at me."

Scumbag puts his hand right in the officer's face and extends his middle finger. Officer grabs the finger and twists the crap out of it causing the scumbag to squeal like an offended piglet.

This is great..........the officer then tells the guy, "Sir, you may now travel on your way."

Well, the guy shows up at the department, cussing and screaming at the civilian front desk clerk, demanding to speak with the Chief.

The Chief hears the commotion and walks out of his office. He orders the guy to lower his voice and come into his office. The guy tells the Chief what happened. The Chief stood up, grabbed the guy by the nap of the neck and back of belt and physically starts walking him out of the office toward the front door. He is telling the guy he is lucky the officer did not break his G**D*** finger, stops by the front desk clerk and orders scumbag to apologize to the clerk, then throws him out the front door.

This Chief had worked his way up the ranks. Started with Phoenix P.D. in the late 50’s where he had been shot in the line of duty, went to DPS and worked his way up the ranks before coming to our city as the Chief.

My first meeting with the Chief was when I and three other brand new recruits were called into his office before starting the academy.

    He sat there, smoking a cigar, feet up on the desk, and told us;

“I got some basic rules for you guys…

Number one; if you step on your d*** out there, tell me about it. You may get thirty days off without pay, but you will have a job. If you lie to me, I will fire you and personally throw you out the door.

Number two; if one of my officers goes to the hospital and suspect does not, I will have the *** of those back up officers.”

Now, THAT was Old School, and I miss it.

(A few of the old timers on here did not know this Chief, but they knew men just like him and probably miss them as much as I do. :( )

The dash cam thing was humor, I think they are great because if someone resists and gets charged you have proof and dont have a civilians word vs cops word case.

Yeah, the commodore is a sweet car. Handles very well. Fetom drives the race car version, which was built for hard driving, but the ones we have are good.

The computers will be a huge plus. It will be nice to have an idea of who or what I'm pulling over before I walk up to the door.
There's been more than once where a person has left without any checks being done at the time only to find when you check them up later they've got warrants or a whereabouts out on them. They were supposed to go online on the 15th of this month, but it's been pushed back to about the 28th.

And Cat, that's my kind of old school.

    I would!

I loved the PR24! I probably miss that the most and when I strolled the streets of downtown as a beat cop. That was a blast. Day after day, knowing all the shop owners, if anyone EVER bothered me, I probably wouldn't need to fight. The shop owners would all shoot at the suspect before I could get my gun out. I don't ever see beat cops anymore. I guess it's because they are such a target.

I miss slapping the crap out of someone in an interrogation though. :D
