Sarita, TX, May. 11 (UPI) -- The U.S. Border Patrol Wednesday seized nearly four tons of marijuana hidden in a truck load of pineapples in South Texas.
A search dog alerted agents to the truck when it was stopped at the Sarita checkpoint about 6:18 a.m., Customs and Border Protection officials said
Agents searched the trailer and discovered 320 bundles of marijuana weighing about 7,309 pounds. The illegal marijuana had an estimated street value of $5,847,200, officials said.
Nearly 73 tons of marijuana with a combined estimated street value of $116 million has been seized in the Rio Grande Valley sector during fiscal 2005, officials said.
The 26-year-old driver from LaVilla, Texas, was arrested and the marijuana was transferred to the Drug Enforcement Administration in Corpus Christi, Texas.
