    No pressure!

I'm putting together a class on DUI legal. Over the last two years the state has had a lot of legal changes to our DUI code and it has changed the way we're supposed to do some things. It's a one day class and I'm going over a bunch of the legal changes, refresher on RS and PC for DUI stops, common problems, best practices for our agency etc. I've been reading state code and judicial decisions till my eyes were crossed. Just my instructors notes for the class is a pile of paper about an inch thick. I got power points the whole nine yards. I'm even doing it with one of our prosecutors to make sure we get their perspective into our cases.

My boss, the patrol captain says he needs legal for his certification and he's coming. I worked for him when he was an LT and he's really laid back so I'm not too stressed over that. I checked today to see who was coming and there's the Major's name (your cousin Darin.) Now that ratchets it up a bit.

Did I mention I've never developed a class before and this is the first time I'm teaching?

I'm sure you'll do well, but I'll say good luck anyway. I was just up that way last night for the MADD awards and met a lot of great people. Worst part about teaching DUI laws is that they will all change again July 1st, so you'll have to do it again next year.

I do know we will get the per se levels on Schedule II drugs and they will do away with the 233A (if they don't refuse).

I've incorporated some of the pertinent 2005 changes in this class as well. The only problem with the new drug per se laws is that they are only in 18.2-266 and not also in 268.10 (at least not that we can tell at this point, maybe it will be fixed by July 1.) It's not quite as legally strong the way we are getting it. Our CA is recommending we still get a toxicologist at least in the beginning and see how it shakes out in court with some case law.

Cool, go with it! I teach different courses here for LEO's. I always have to incorporate something funny to keep them interested. Then always add in some gory stuff. They love that. On hands training, such as bringing a taser to class is always interesting, as well. In your case, you might want to drive a deputy with you to get drunk and breath test him. That's hysterical! The students like to see the results.

    Good luck!!!

I'm sure I did, but names are hard for me to remember. They said that it was the largest MADD award ceremony in the country. If you talk to him he'll know me as the Trooper that gave a short speech about getting hit by three drunk drivers (and guilted every other Trooper into speaking).

You'll do just fine. Just don't stress out before the class, and I'm sure teaching it will just come to you naturally since you know your material. Good luck to you. Post back and let us know how it goes. Looking forward to hearing about it!

Oh Valor, with all the help you have been to me, I can assure you that you should do just fine pulling this all together. Now, go break a leg, or a PBT. LOL If you guys still use those.

Get completely plasterd before the class. Nothing will illustrate your points about drinking better than a real live example.
