Can someone tell me what's so wrong with the REAL ID Act?

Aside from it being unfunded ....

The main things the real ID Act requires is that:

    1. That you need to have lawful status

    2. That visa-holders get temporary licenses only now

    3. That birth certificates and other documents need to be verified

The only thing that potentially could cause a problem is having DMVs call up each podunk county's BVS on their own. But this problem can be solved with the creation of a good database.

Please explain to me what is so wrong with this. All the Real ID Act is asking is that only those entitled to get licenses get them ....

From a LEO view, it would be great.

From a personal view, I dont want all my info in
a govt computer that cant be made safe from hackers.
(govt systems are know for being open doors to hackers)

For those of us raised in church, it bring thoughts of the
mark of the beast. Instead of a card, why not a tattoo or
microchip in the back of the hand.

And what happens if you accidently get DELETED from the
data base. Never happen you say, wanna bet.
The state of Kansas once deleted me from my health insurance
plan. The only thing that saved me, was they were still taking
out money every month. Took almost 6 months to correct ONCE
    I found out about it.

Sorry, Kels, you'd better stop charging ANYTHING. No more ordering food to be delivered. Ditch your utilities, cable tv/satellite, go squat on someone else's property and ditch anything with your name attached to it. IT ALL GOES INTO DATABASES.... ALL of it.

It's not hacking that would be the problem. Especially since the information is stored at the department of homeland security/Pentagon. Unless you've ever heard of someone tapping into the pentagons database besides your movies, I wouldn't worry to much about it. If they use this fingerprint technology and retinal scanner technology like they are supposed to then you shouldn't have to worry about your safety, defense and of course identity theft.

13:2 Therefore whoever resists authority has opposed the ordinance of God; and they who have opposed will receive condemnation upon themselves.

I am quite aware of how easy it is to track down someone.
I tend to live as low profile as possible.
Even if this is impossible for a small town LEO.
This becomes very clear when a past customer looks you
up after they get out of prison. AFTER you have changed jobs
and moved a couple of hundred miles away. Thankfully there
was no bad intent on their part. Just stopped by to say HI.

Hacking may have been the wrong word. The thought I was looking
for is more along the lines of improper access to information.

    1. The unfunded part is huge and is something that shouldn't be glossed over. I mean, why not have universal health care and college for everyone, other than it's not funded?

    2. So to get this uniform federal ID (which it really is) you have to provide your birth certificate, which are not uniform, and a lot of places do not have digital records of the birth certificates. So how is this verified? How does the California DMV verify the birth certificate of me, who is from Allegheny County in PA?

    3. To get the ID you MUST provide your real home address. You can't put the police department down as your address of record now.

    3. Why should the federal government tell the states how to license their drivers? Why not just say, "Hey, we need a federal ID" rather than disguising it this way? I look at it as a states rights issue on top of all the other reasons.

    4. RFID chips. The act does not specifically call for them, but uses language that would allow them. I have nothing to hide, but I don't want my location tracked. You know that every Best Buy would have a reader that tells them who is browsing their store. I already get to much junk mail.

    5. I would have to prove to the DMV that my social security card is valid. How do I do that?

    6. "Rep. James Sensenbrenner, R-Wis., argued the additional hassle of verification was a small price to pay” When was the last time he had to go to the CA DMV? I feel my blood pressure rise at the thought of going to that quagmire of bureaucratic inefficiencies.

    Just my $.02

Noting is wrong with it. The act required verification for a ID card.

The illegals and others are upset that they'll have to prove their legal to get ID's and DL's. There needs to be more verification any way. Once I get a valid ID card and i'm not entitled to it, I can continue to get other legal ID's based on the false ID.

The cost is going to be a small issue. It's just a matter of tieing existing databases together so that the stuff can be electronically verified.

Nothing that they are asking is not being done already in each state. For the ones that don't have the technology, they still have a telephone.

The government already has that right when they allowed each states ID cards to be valid in other states, so it's about time..

This act would be bad for gun owners.

Taken from www.packing.org. I didnt write this but wish I did.

    * You walk into a gun store, fill out your 4473, and show your government ID just as you now do. But instead of looking at your license and taking down some information, the clerk runs the license (which is likely to contain a radio-frequency ID chip) through a scanner. Your purchase is instantly recorded in your state drivers license registry. The federal government isn't currently allowed to keep a gun registry. But no problem; the Real ID act gives them an open door into your state records.

    * Complete information on every firearm you buy will be instantly available to every police officer (and possibly every government employee, store clerk, or computer hacker) you ever encounter. You'll be an instant criminal suspect every time you deal with someone who has access to the database.

    * Just as travelers are encouraged to get background checks and give fingerprints to avoid some of the worst excesses of TSA screening, gun owners will be encouraged to get background checks and give whatever biometric ID the Department of Homeland Security requires. This will be sold as a "benefit," ensuring you'll never again experience an "instant-check" delay. In fact, Congress, the ATF, or the FBI might even "mandate" 5-day or 15-day delays for anyone not enrolled in the "Trusted Firearms Buyer" program.
"In memory of DCLaw- EOW@RealPolice 02-20-2007.
We won't rest 'till we find the mutt.

Sheriff, we are coming for you.
