Officer Steve Irwin to the rescue

I get a call of a snake in a womans basement and she's freaking out. When the ACO goes home the regular patrol guys are animal control. And luck would have it on my side of the city too.


I get there and this woman is freaking out. I tell her to calm down and tell me where it is. So I go to the basement where she last seen the snake. She's telling me where the shovel is so I can kill it. Well I see the snake and it's a small Garter snake about 16" long. I do a Steve Irwin and pick it and say "She's a beauty!" The complainant is still freaking and I tell her I'm going to go in the woods and release it. I calm her down by telling her it's harmless and is more scared of her than she is of it.

It was real tame and never tried to strike at me. I let it loose in some woods behind the neighborhood and it goes on its merry way. I go back and try to calm her again by searching her basement for more. I tell her that I don't see anymore and it was probably alone down there. Well she's happy it's gone and call completed.

PS- I should add that I used to raise Boa Constrictors and have had many snakes. I like snakes so I didn't want to needlessly kill it. They'll keep mice away from your house.

Have you ever seen Snakemaster with Austin Stevens on Animal Planet? It's a great show - he travels to exotic places searching for snakes. It's much more Indian Jones-esque than Steve Irwin. Venom ER is also cool..

Good job with the snake! I've had few encounters with snakes in my life and I'd more than a little nervous to go looking for an unidentified snake in someone's basement. You're the man.

"She's a beauty!" only works when said with a pronounced Austrailian accent.

It also helps to say, "Krikey!" a bunch of times.

Or..."Your a naughty girl aren't you!" Steve has a fondness of saying that after nearly getting pumped full of venom by nasty creatures.

OUCH! Crickey! I guess I missed those tale tale signs of it being one of those pit vipers that just looks like a Garter snake. No worries mate! *croak* lol

I've had bat calls in the woman's residence hall. Those are funny to watch I'm sure. Those things are hard to catch. The last time, I found a very heavy pair of work gloves and caught the bat when it hid behind a curtain rod. It bit the glove and wouldn't let go. And when I got outside with it- it wouldn't fly away. Guess I sqeezed it a tad too hard. And of course, the whole time I was trying to catch it, the complainant was going, "Don't hurt it!" I finally looked at her and said, "Hey-you called me- remember. Do you want me to leave it here?" She didn't. Luckily, she didn't go out with me to see the "release back to nature" scene.

But, I did get one call on a boa (or maybe a python). The darn thing was about 6 feet long. There was a guy there that got a pillow case and told me, "Grab it by the head- don't worry- it's sleeping. Then we'll slide it into the pillow case."

I'm ashamed to say I punked out. :(

I just couldn't bring myself to grab it. I find as I get older, I'm a lot less daring than I used to be.
